I have been living with migraine for over 30 years now, and the best treatment I have had has only given me moderate relief. I still have some daily symptoms, whether is is a headache getting ready to begin, or my getting over one. I have been to every neurologist in my relatively small city (Knoxville, TN), and no one seems to be very concerned or have much knowledge. The latest medication I have been put on is Depakote. It has caused a 30 pound weight gain, and I am suffering from water retention to the extent that I am pitting as far up as my knees. Because I am overweight to start with, I do not feel that my doctor takes this that seriously. My husband conforms that I am eating less. (I feel so bloated from the water.) It is a 45 minute (at best) drive to the nearest ER (which I have to go to about once a month.)
I think about anyone would agree that my migraine is not sufficiently controlled. My quality of life is nil because I cannot plan anything because I never know when a migraine will strike. I am depressed, and this is also very wearing on my husband-- who is amazing at helping me.
My question is where do you get help when you live on the edge of nowhere? I have an appointment in 4 months to go to a headache clinic in Nachville, TN. Does anyone have any experience with headache clinics? Is it worth the drive, or will this just be another depressing trial in my search for relief?

A headache specialist is definitely what you need. General neurologists have to keep up with too many other diseases to keep up with migraine. A headache specialist has seen patients in similar conditions to yours.
Unpredictability is a biggie for me, too. When we accept invitations, it's always with the proviso that I may not be able to make it. I missed both office Christmas parties last year.
