My Migraines

By teeteeC Thursday, December 15, 2011

Hi Im a 15 year old teen girl, ive been suffering with migraines for 3 years now, with what is to me horrible  symptons. Theese include:

  • slurred speech
  • left arm shaking
  • left leg numb/limp
  • excruiating headache round the temple and back of my head
  • nausea
  • tiredness/fatigue
  • clawed/weakness of my hand(left)

At first nobody knew of my symptoms, doctors were telling my parents i was doing it for attention (i have a younger brother) people were thinking i had a stroke and i was completely lost, now after countless battles, arguements, missed school days and what i call theese migraines-"attacks" i am simply lost and baffled im actually starting to think its in my head myself. I can only stay in school for upto one day as my migraines make me extremely weak and i hate the fact my arm shakes, the left side of my body goes limp and i am totally tired, i actually feel like giving up. Can anybody relate?

Oh sweetie you are not crazy! I have migraines that also have srtange neuro symptoms and have had Dr's tell me its bad stress managment, Its amazing how stupin Dr's can be. Thankfully I was able to be diagnosed with "hemiplegic migraine". You need to see a migraine specialst! Someone who will know how to treat you. If you can have your parents look at this site too. There is so much good info that I have not been able to find anyweare els.

Know you are not alone!

I'm 19 almost 20 and I have had daily chronic migraines since I was 14.  I know how difficult it is and how few people understand!!! I recommend going to Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy AHDA.  You can find doctors who specials in chronic migraines and find ways to support migraine research.  I'm not headache free but I no longer feel helpless

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

Oh sweetie, what an awful position to be in. It is bad enough to be in pain, but when no one believes you it makes it much worse. It may be time to see an expert who deals with Migraines rather than a primary care doctor, pediatrician or neurologist. See, the thing is, neurologists may be fine doctors and say they are headache specialists, but that really isn't the case. Because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy it is hard for them to be experts in one area. A Migraine specialist is just that, an expert who treats one disorder - ours - Migraines and headaches. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. Feel free to show this information to your parents, and they can get in touch with us if they want. You can't continue to miss school and life, you poor thing.
