I am a 48 year old woman who has suffered with migraines for 22 years. The frequency and intensity of them varies. Recently I have been having a lot of migraines (12 in April). I saw a neurologist who prescribed Axert to stop them and Verapamil to prevent them. He also referred me to an anesthesiologist to see about trying an occiptal nerve block. I haven't started taking the Verapamil yet. I saw the anesthesiologist on Thursday (5/10) and had 2 nerve blocks, one on each side since I get migraines on both sides of my head. The procedure itself wasn't bad, it felt like a couple of bee stings and the feeling went away very quickly. The back of my head was sore yesterday but only when I leaned it against something. It is much better today and so far, no migraines. I will continue to update this sharepost as time goes by and I see how the blocks are working. The anesthesiologist told me that they should decrease the frequency and intensity of my migraines. This is something I just learned about for treating/preventing migraines and I thought I'd share it with anyone who is out there seeking something different in treatment. I don't know whether it will work or not, but I figured if I tried it and it didn't then I would know and move on. If anyone else has had this procedure, let me know how it has worked out for you.

I read you post and I thank you so much for posting it. My doctor has too recommended this proceedure but I am having trouble with my insurance. They say this is too new and they will not pay. I have gone through botiox and about every medicine out there. I have anywhere from 2 to 3 migraines a week and my insurance won't pay for something that has the potential to end my pain???? This just doesn't make sense to me at all. I am so frustrated. How on earth did you get your insurance to pay?
