Exercise helpful for my headaches

By dianacwolf Wednesday, June 27, 2007
I have migraines related to FMS.  I'm 38 now, and started getting chronic daily headaches at age 18.
Over the past year, I've made a lot of changes that have allowed me to get off my migraine medications.  I completely changed my diet, getting really strict about what I eat, and I've gotten very serious about exercise.  I now hit the gym almost everyday, and the workouts have made a huge difference.  I also feel good about myself, more empowered, now that I am working out. I feel like I finally have control over my body, after 20 years of feeling like my body was working against me.
It's a great feeling of freedom to be off the drugs, and no longer chained to daily prescriptions, or at the mercy of doctors, pharmacies and drug companies.  I very happily flushed my meds down the toilet. - Diana

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Thank you for creating a SharePost. SharePosts are a form of blogging, and there are many things you can do with them. You can share an experience, suggest something that's helped you, use SharePosts as a Migraine and headache journal, and many other things.

Congratulations on reducing your Migraine attacks. Since Migraine is a genetic neurological disease, you are very lucky. Many people who suffer from this chronic condition have also made wonderful lifestyle changes that include daily exercise and diet restriction. We can also add keeping a good sleep schedule and avoiding other triggers. Some of us are not so lucky in reducing or dropping our daily preventive medications. But keeping a positive attitude like you mentioned is key.

We also have a discussion forum that you may want to check out. Especially if you have questions or are looking for information, you may find the interaction on the forum to be quite helpful. To get to the forum, just look for the orange box marked "Manage" and click on the Migraine Forums link. Because our forums are maintained by a third party, you'll need to register for the forum. Hi Nancy!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I look forward to being a part of this community.

I thought I might have to backpedal on getting off my abortive meds last week. It was my first full week without Topamax, the very last daily med I was still on. I seem to tolerate the side effects of Topamax very well, especially compared to experiences listed by others. But, I knew the med was still impairing my mental abilities somewhat, ("Dopamax"), and I just wanted to see what life would be like without this med.

Last week was pretty tough. I had a lot of headaches, and was very tired. I couldn't tell if this was a reaction to being off Topamax, or just a fibromyalgia flare, or perhaps I had picked up a virus or something.

But, I stuck it out, figuring I'd give it at least another week or two, before jumping back on the Topamax bandwagon.

Today was the first day things were significantly better. My energy began to return, and I was able to get back to the gym again. (Last week, I felt so sick that I missed several days of workouts in a row.)

Surprisingly, though, I haven't seen a big jump in mental clarity, like I hoped being off Topamax.

I actually see no difference.

I guess maybe some of my mental fog was being caused by the fibromyalgia, and not the Topamax, after all.

I have noticed my appetite has increased significantly, (not an overly desirable thing. Topamax suppresses appettite.)

Well, thanks again for the warm welcome, and i look forward to learning all I can from the people on this board.

Regards,
Diana
