pain all over body

By grateful Sunday, May 04, 2008

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have referred pain all over your body during migraines? If yes, have you found any successful treatments?

My symptoms:

eye pain - pressure and tearing

ear pain - similar to an inner ear infection

tooth pain - enough to consider going to the dentist

nose pain - similar to sinus infection

neck and back pain - similar to my car accident several years ago

arms and leg joint pain - arthritic type pain that hits upper arm and leg , lower arm and legdo and even down to my fingers and toes

arms and leg muscle pain – similar to overuse injury pain – after extensive workout

stomach pain - like an ulcer

- photophobia

- phonophobia

The referred pain usually lasts 3-6 hours after the migraine pain dissipates and then its gone.

please advise,

MJ

Yes, some people can experience referred pain when they have Migraines. Anatomy of a Migraine describes some symptoms during an attack. Not everyone gets each symtpom with each Migraine attack.

Hi there - so sorry to hear about your referred pain. As someone who experiences it often, my neuro suggested tramadol.  As I am not part of your medical team I cannot say whether they may think it may be right for you - but I  would ask them about it, as it has been helpful with me.

Yes, I just suffered from an almost identical episode.  I have fibromyalgia and what I call the "body migraine" has happened before but not like this for a long time.  I suspect it was a reaction to a drug I took for a UTI.  When I read the warnings in the druggist's information it warned about "tendon" issues, especially if you're over 60, which I am.  I often have unusual reactions to drugs so I only take them when necessary.  Interesting that your symptoms reminded you of past injuries.   That was the weirdest thing about this....it was as if every one of the various pain issues I've had in my life marched through my body for four days.  I'm still feeling a bit shaky.  For those 4 days it got worse as the day progressed each day.  No solutions...just make sure I remember what that drug did to me!

The pain in my abdomen is so intense during a migraine, that I have visited the hospital several times.  I have had tons of tests, including ct, ultrasound, and x-ray.  I, too, have the joint pain, accompanied by swelling. After more extensive and expensive tests, no source for my "traveling" pain was detected.  I had an MD seriously question my mental health. Finally, I found a sympathetic ER doc who gave me Reglan. It asked my doctor for a prescription.

The only treatment I find effective is Reglan.  It has been nothing short of a miracle.

I have experienced what I call feeling like I've been hit by a bus or kicked by a horse.  It feels like the muscle pain after working out too hard, but all over.  Yesterday, for example, my upper arms felt achey.  I just figured I'd slept in a wierd position.  By 10:am or so my thighs ached as well, then progressed down my legs, all through my back, etc, all soft tissue though.  By noon I wasn't able to understand what a co-worker was saying over the phone.  It was as if the connection was garbled.

By 2:pm I'd gone home and was in bed.  I slept a hard dead sleep for a few hours and woke up craving popcorn.  My head hadn't begun to hurt.  My body aches were beginning to subside, and were gone by 10:am the following morning.  That afternoon as I was driving on an errand I noticed my congnitive function still was messed up.  I had to concentrate on what the cars around me were doing.

The headache did begin, but wasn't horrible.  I've never known what it was and haven't had an episode like this for a few years.  In those few years I have had frequent migraine headaches.  Weird!  Other than calling it "being kicked by a horse" all I can think of is a full body migraine.  Oh, and equilibrium is off as well during it.

I'm so sorry anyone else has to deal with this type of thing.  The great part about it is for me it is very short lived.  Comes on fast and lasts about 24 - 48 hours.

Yes but I would describe my pain differently.  I have all over body pain the feels like I'm bruised all over.  Any place I touch is tender, including my face and scalp.  It doesn't happen with every migraine and there is no way to predict it.  It seems like no medication helps and I've tried the triptans, Torodol, Vicodin, and Percocet.  No luck with any of them.  Perhaps I'll inquire about Tramadol at my next neuro appt.  Glad to know it's not just me!
