Why is it so hard to find a doctor who cares?

By Migraine Chick Thursday, November 29, 2007
Why is it so hard to find a doctor who gives a rat *** about you?

I went back to see the neurologist, the one who had prescribed Amerge, which I had a nightmare reaction to. I had decided to give her one more chance, which was a huge mistake.

The first thing that tipped me off that this wasn't going to go well was when she came into the examination room without my chart. She asked me why I was there. I explained the history about my migraines again, repeated the story about the Amerge and told her that I had tried the Midrin three times, but it had done nothing more than make my dizzy.

She said the only thing left was anti-inflammatorys. Huh. At My Migraine Connection says there are over a hundred different possible combinations of drugs to try. Telling her that those had never really helped me, I pressed her further. She brought up Topamax, which I had already told her gave me bad side effects in the previous visit.

She asked me what else I was doing for my migraines. I told her that I've been taking Inderal, and I used cooling patches for my forehead, and I take a Tramadol sometimes when it gets really bad. Mostly I end up in my bedroom in the dark, crying into my pillow because the pain is so bad.

This is when she shrugged. I had just told her that I was crying into my pillow and she shrugged.

"Are you taking any supplements?" she asked.

Having given up on the magnesium, I told her that I was taking soy for my hot flashes. She got all wide eyed and exclaimed, "Soy is plant estrogen, and it will give you cancer."

What? I thought. I have researched soy because I'm a vegetarian and I've never seen anything about it giving you cancer. What about all those Asian countries where people eat tofu everyday? Are they all going to get cancer?

"See your primary doctor about that," she told me.

"Is there anything else I can try?" I asked.

Begrudgingly, she wrote me a prescription for Fiorcet, told me to let her know how I was doing in a month, and she left the room.

I glanced at my watch. She had spent six minutes with me. I think a pet rat at a vet's office probably would have gotten more time.
Firing a Doctor?

can you say "FIRE HER SORRY BUTT!"

Really, what a waste of time and space that appointment was....I'm sorry to hear that.

Clearly it is time for a new doctor. Any chance you can see a Migraine Specialist we encourage people to see Big Grin? Experts in the field are usually more compassionate than your "garden variety" neuro. (Not all neuros of course, let me be clear....)

I agree with Nancy, it's time to fire her sorry butt and move on.  Use the link Nancy put in her reply to find a headache specialist.

There are doctors out there who spend more than 6 minutes with you and don't shrug off your pain.  Don't give up until you find one.

Short version:

Get.

A.

New.

Neurologist.

Longer version: What a pathetic excuse for medical care your "doctor" exhibited.  Geez, even we patients here atMMC know that fioricet's famous for causing rebound headaches.

Even my neuro had suggestions for me when he beleived he'd hit the end of his appropriate options for me.  We tweaked my meds slightly to soften the side effects (to which I'm unusually sensitive) and he had suggestions about a particular doc at a headache clinic in the area.

Added bonus suggestion: Drop a dime on that doc to your state's board of registration in medicine or equivalent agency.  Your doc's behavior may not reach the level of formal complaint, but if your doc is such a lightweight, you're not the only one getting crappy treatment.  Establishing a "paper trail" is a vital step in standing up for good treatment and standing up TO crappy treatment.

Thank you for the great advice. I'm definately going to follow up on this, because I don't want anyone else to experience the same thing.

I'm sure you already know that it's time to leave that doctor in the dust.  Sometimes it takes a few tries to get a doctor that you respond to.  There are many treatment options out there.  Don't let her lack of emapthy and refusal to excercise any independant thought dissuade you from finding what you need to ease the pain.  In the end we need to be proactive in finding what works for us.

Also, I've never heard of plant estrogen causing cancer.  For her to say that is just ridiculous.  In fact there is evidence that plant estrogens may actually prevent cancer.  http://www.cbcrp.org/research/PageGrant.asp?grant_id=52

Thank you for the link. I agree that it's time to move on. I used to think we should give doctors a chance to prove themselves, but with migraines, we just don't have that luxury of time.

I'm going through a lot of what you are going through so I can understand! I am all set for a fight with my family doctor tomorrow! They don't want to give referrals, they want to try to treat everything themself. I have been living in constant pain for three months now so its just plain time to admit defeat and give me the danged referral to the specialist or I'll be spitting mad!!! Like that is good for migraines/headaches and won't be a trigger! I have been taking midrin, it does hardly anything for me. I can use the imitrex and triptans they make my heart race (so does midrin but the dr doesn't give a rats....well, you know what I was going to say LOL) Is fiorcet the one with vicodin in it? I've tried it if so. It didn't work at all for me. Everyone is different though. What works for one will not for another. I'm on inderal also. Tried topamax but it was a long time ago and can't remember why I stopped taking it. Good luck! If you don't like the doctor you are seeing look around and find another. They don't need to act like that. Send a letter to the doctors office stressing your disapproval of how they are treating you also. It could help, particularly if he/she isn't a senior partner in the office. At any rate the doctor may not realise how they are treating people! Good luck!

I agree I have not found a doctor yet that doesnt think I am either a Drug addict or wanting attention or that I am depressed. I think if we are calling what we have a "Desease" that all doctors should have at least some training on this issue so as to be at least a little sempathetic!

You know its hard to find a good doctor when You have no inusurance because you where fired from your job due to attendence because of your Disability. Its just one bad never ending circle.  KR

I'm constantly terrified that I'm going to lose my job because of my migraines, and every day is a stressful event at work, which I think doesn't help my migraines at all. I wish doctors and employers would realize this is a "disease."
