rebound headache

By Rocky Monday, March 12, 2007

Hello all!

I have a question.  How do Iknow if I am in rebound or not?  I have had a migraine since a week ago last Friday, and I can't shake it.  I have finally run out of sick time and had to go to work anyway.  I'm sure alot of you know that sad sad story.  I did all my Dr told me to do, took my Migranol, stayed away from to many doses of this that and the other thing, it still hadn't gone away.  In order to get through the weekend, (I work 36 hrs on the weekend) I did a stupid thing and took to much of my Oxycodone I think.  Question is, how do I get rid of the doggone thing if I do have one?

(I do know the does and don'ts  followed Teri from the other website)  Sometimes the pain just gets to be to much!

Rocky,

Unfortunately, the only way to get out of rebound is to stop taking what caused it and stay away from it until the rebound stops. Are you sure it's rebound? Have you had a break at all, or is it possible this is status Migrainous?

There's a forum here too. If you want to come talk there, just click on the forum link in the orange "Manage" box found on most pages.

welcome!

Nope haven't had a break from it yet.  I know my doc is about ready to put me back in their migraine clinic.  There I will get DHE and all the stuff that goes with it.  TAkes about 3 days but she will get me over it.  Just hate to be stuck in the hospital again.  Seems like I am losing control of these doggone things!

I had rebound headaches for years and my "specialist" claimed they were not rebound.  For me, they came on early am, 4 or 5 am and grew intense very quickly until I took more Imitrex/Amerge/Frova.  This happened almost every day.

My cousin (an RN in Fresno) told me a little bit about DHE 45 and the IV treatment. She thought it was for headaches, not rebounds.

I did some reseach on DHE 45 on the internet and printed out the pertintent pages.  I visited a new physician in my specialist's practice and showed him the literature.  He had heard of the DHE 45.  I begged him to write me a script and that I could give myself shots at home and skip the hospital treament.  He did. My husband gave me the first injection in my thigh.  It burned so bad I hyperventilated and passed out.

The next day I gave myself the injection and took half a dose.  I stuck with half a does for several days, then went to 1/3 of a dose, then 1/4, then 1/5 of a dose.  I gave myself 1/5 of a dose injection for over a year and did not have one headache in that time period.  It was a glorious year!

I thought the headaches were gone so I stopped the DHE and the headaches came right back.  Now I have been unable to achieve the same results with DHE 45.  I am looking for alternatives.  I am so sorry I ever stopped taking the DHE in the first place.

But it will stop the rebounds and you can do it yourself.  Also, it hurts a lot less if you take the shot in the stomach in stead of the thigh.

I hope this helps.

Mari,

DHE is not for daily use. It is one of the biggest culprits for causing rebound. The reason you had such horrid headaches when you quit taking it was most likely rebound. Additionally, DHE can be quite hard on the blood vessels around where you inject it. Please be very careful. I have a friend who got gangrene in the calf of the leg where he injected DHE into the thigh.
