15 year old with complete paralysis during migraine

By KB Thursday, November 06, 2008

My daughter just turned 15 and has never had a migraine until 2 months ago. She has been diagnosed with complicated migraine. She has had almost every test possible from a CT scan, lumbar pucture, EEG, MRI,EKG and chest x-ray and a variety of blood tests. She also had allergy testing, showing some food and environmental allergies. During her first series, the migraines clustered for 6 days straight, then off and on since. She has the aura and we have been told not to take estrogens and triptans as they can increase her risk of stroke. Her migraines lead to complete paralysis for 1 1/2-2 1/2 hours, then it leaves her exhausted and achy for several more. She is 14 days migraine free!!! She is on Cyproheptid (which helps with allergies also), CoQ 10, B2, Magnesium (we separate the Mg and Ca) a multi vitamin (she takes her supplements in 3 divided doses during the day)we have eliminated certain foods and she had a bite plate made for night when she sleeps. We also think...not sure... that they could be tied into her cycles. She is now also doing an independent study program from home, which allows her some flexibility.I know it has only been 14 days, but we every good day we can right now. I also know it is different for everyone, but I hope sharing this has helped in some way.

I am sorry your daughter is suffering. I want to let you know there is hope! Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. As of now, there is no cure, but with the right treatment plan, it is possible to cut down the frequency and maybe even the intensity of Migraine. According to the International Headache Society, "complicated Migraine" is not a proper diagnosis. Many doctors use that term for any Migraine more complicated to treat then just Migraine or Migraine with Aura. We have a listing of all types of Migraine on our site: HERE.

Also, please take a look at our Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. With the symptoms your daughter is having, she needs a specialist. See our article explaining why Migraine Specialists are so special: HERE.

I am happy to hear that your daughter has had 14 days Migraine free! That is wonderful!!!

Your daughter must get very scared when she has a Migraine attack with "complete paralysis." I know I would be as a Migraineur and her mom. Let me see if I can give you some additional information that may be helpful.

Hemiplegic Migraine (HM) is a rare form of Migraine disease. It is the only type of Migraine that has true motor weakness or paralysis as one of its symptoms. This can be difficult condition to diagnose, because there are other conditions that can mimic HM. In addition epilepsy, stroke and MS have similar sypmtoms. Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics is filled with important information for you to read.

A Migraine specialist is the expert to help you with this diagnosis, we have a patient recommended specialist list you can see HERE

Let me know what else we can do for you, ok? And keep us posted on your daughter.

Thank you for your concern and info.  We have done alot of research since this all began.  She is seeing a pediatric neurology group at the time.  There have been many changes in her diet.  She was terrified  as we all were during the begining of it all.  She seems to be adjusting well.  She is almost 21 days migraine free!!!!!!  We will keep the site posted....

Hello,

Wanted to let you know how it is going...My daughter has been doing much better, it has been about 2 months since her last migraine.  It was a migraine without the headache, just all the neurological symptoms.  She has had a few headaches a week, but nothing full blown.  We have found a regimen of supplements that seems to be working along with diet modifications and fresh vegetable juice daily.  She still struggles with sleeping quite often, so we are trying to manage that also.

Thanks,
