Regular migraines & occassionally silent migraine

By Daffydeb Saturday, October 10, 2009

I'm feeling much better now but had a pretty bad migraine last night. I've felt it coming on for a couple of days (mild-controlled fairly well by Tylenol), but last night it came on full force. I had to take several Dramamines and Alleve as well as use a cold gel pack.

As the day wore on today I began to feel better so I knew what should come next. I was right, my migraines have been hormonal 80-90% of the time so my period started this evening right on cue. I am 51! Is this going to stop when I finally go thru menopause? I pray that this is so.

I inherited this type of migraine - headache, Nauseau, and sesitivity to light (never seen any auras) from mom's side of the family. I 've got the silent migraine from dad's side. It involves a rapid onset of severe dizziness and nausea but no headache. Frequently though  the symptoms are mild enough to control with dramamine and I can still function. The severe ones I remember and have been lucky enough to have only 4 or 5 times in my life.  Debbie

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Oh, I wish I could tell you that your Migraines would stop after menopause, but unfortunatlely it is different for each woman. There is no set pattern I'm afraid, some woman with menstrually-related Migraines see a reduction in them, while others aren't so lucky. We have a question from our Ask the Clinician, Dr. Krusz that may be helpful: Prevention of menstrual Migraines? And this article: Migraine Disease, Menstrual Migraines, and Hysterectomy.

Have you ever tried any of the triptans to abort your Migraine attack? These are medications taken at the first sign of a Migraine that stops the Migrainous process. You can read about that here: Taking Triptans During Migraine Aura May Work Better

Debbie,  I empathize as a 35 yr migraineur. When I was in perimenopause for who knows how many years, my hormone-driven migraines were frequent and regular- almost i/2 of every month. Thank goodness for somewhat-effective prophylactic drugs. But once my periods stopped and I entered into full-blown menopause, my headaches have become much less regular, less frequent, and usually less severe. Still get them, though. Since my insurance cut back my Amerge from 25 to 3/month(!), I am grateful they have improved. I hope yours do too, in the near future.
