Results Of MRF's Parent's Survey Are In

By Migraine Research Foundation, Health Guide Thursday, March 04, 2010

The Migraine Research Foundation recently conducted an informal survey of parents whose children suffer from migraine.  The many candid and thoughtful responses we received were a reflection of the concerns we all share.

The number one challenge encountered by the parents who participated is getting their kids properly treated. But more than half also say they are very concerned about the impact their child’s migraines have on school and social activities.  About 10% of school-age children suffer from migraine. And, children who suffer are absent from school twice as often as children who don’t.

Parents also express great apprehension about the worsening of their child’s migraines over time – in frequency or intensity. Half of all migraine sufferers have their first attack before the age of 12, and about 60% who had migraines in adolescence report ongoing migraines after age 30.

About half of the parents told us they thought that other people viewed their child’s complaints about migraines as a way for them to get sympathy, special attention, or avoid responsibilities. This perception certainly adds to the stress these kids already feel.

But parents know their child’s migraines are very real.  That’s why we have to continue to fund research into the causes of migraine, to develop new and improved treatments for sufferers and to find the cure. Our children can’t wait. Please support the Migraine Research Foundation's work funding migraine research. Donate at www.migraineresearchfoundation.org/donate.
