The American Headache Society and the Migraine Research Foundation are pleased to announce that Anna Andreou, PhD, has been awarded the 2010 Thomas E. Heftler Migraine Research Award for her proposal, “Corticothalamic feedback and trigeminothalamic sensory processing during cortical spreading depression - relevance to migraine with aura.”

Dr. Andreou is the second recipient of the Heftler award, which was created and funded by the Migraine Research Foundation in memory of Mr. Heftler who was a founding member of the MRF Board of Directors. The $10,000 award recognizes the most innovative research proposal in migraine by a neurology resident or headache medicine fellow in an accredited U.S. program.

Dr. Andreou will conduct her research at the Headache Group in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. She will work in collaboration with Dr. Peter J. Goadsby, Professor of Neurology and Principal Investigator at the Headache Group. Dr. Andreou received her PhD from the Institute of Neurology at University College London,UK.

The Migraine Research Foundation is the only organization whose sole purpose is to raise funds for innovative scientific research to further the understanding of the causes and mechanisms of migraine, to develop improvements in treatment, and to find the cure.

The American Headache Society is a professional organization comprised of physicians and other health care professionals dedicated to improving the care and lives of headache sufferers. AHS will administer the award and provide a forum for presenting the research results at the AHS Annual Scientific Meeting.
