You may need to find a new doctor who is willing to work with you towards your treatment plan, a Migraine specialist. While neurologists may be fine doctors, Migraine specialists devote their entire practice to treating patients with Migraine disease and headache disorders. These doctors are on the cutting edge of treatment options and new diagnostic tools.
Think of it this way, when a pipe under your kitchen sink breaks you call a plumber, the expert. You could call a carpenter who can fix the pipe, then fix the cabinets, paint the room and so forth. Neurologists treat so many different conditions it is hard for them to be experts in any one area. A Migraine specialist is just that - an expert treating only Migraines and headache disorders. It is hard for a neurologist to be an expert in any one area because they treat so many conditions; stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson's, etc. We have a list of patient recommended Migraine specialists you can see by clicking HERE.

The only thing that has ever worked for me is Axert. I mean, this med works within 20 minutes. I am so very thankful for this drug. It keeps migraines away for a few weeks at a time.

DHE

Friday, September 05, 2008 at 12:07 AMI have had migraines for over 30 years and after suffering for many of them was givin DHE injections to give myself at home. They were a Godsend. I felt like I'd been given my life back as nothing worked for me and/or the drugs made me feel sick. While giving yourself and IM injection is not pleasant it was worth it. Also, when I would be in a bad cycle, getting constant migraines the doc would admit me tothe hospital and give IV DHE.
Unfortunately, I have had a stroke, my neurologist thinks due to a "complicated migraine" and so am no longer allowed to take DHE or triptans to due increased stroke risk. But, my siutation is rare.
Believe me if I could take DHE I would in a second as now my migraines are much worse again adn I am dealing with all kinds of medication problems.
I hope you get help. I have children and it is just so terrible to try to take care of a family with migraines. My daughter has inherited them too and it is just breaking my heart.
Well good luck to you

Friday, September 05, 2008 at 09:03 AMThank You, for the support. I am now on Prozac which I don't think is working. I don't even feel less depressed. What is DHE? Imatrex is about the only thing that has worked, but the doctor said my MRI showed thining of some veins, so he wants me to take less imatrex. Now I suffer. My son and daughter both get migraines as does my sister and mother had them. Thanks for the suggestion about DHE at this point I am ready for anything.

Friday, September 05, 2008 at 01:28 PMDHE = Dihydroergoatmine. However, I am NOT a doctor but also imagine that if you are already having vein problems they won't let you take it. Don't know but don't want to get your hopes up further on that. I too, was given Prozac many many years ago as a migraine preventative but it didn't work and as my husband said, "just made me act weird" Some people can just take a pill and be better. I wish we were among those. I've been on so may meds over all these years and when you tell people that they think all kinds of things. Even medical people who should know better. It is really hard and I hope it helps to know that you aren't alone in this. I am thinking I've got to step up my approach again and find a real Headache Clinic to deal with this as the straight neurologist route is limited. Scary that my local hospital is limited too and I am scared to go there. Anyway, probably rambling again but my head hurts as, as you well know, we do the best we can at times like that.
It is wonderful to find this community of people that "get it" so please don't give up. Maybe if we all stick together we'll be ok.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!
No, you don't have to live with two Migraines a week. Migraine, a genetic neurologic disease, takes a toll on the entire family. We can provide you with information and education to help you on your way to feeling better, how does that sound?
For some Migraineurs, hormones do have an impact on their Migraine attacks, I know mine do. Frova, a triptan, has shown to provide relief for some sufferers look for more information on this topic here - Ask the Clinican: Prevention of menstrual Migraines?
Trigger identifcation and management are important parts of a Migraine prevention plan. Keeping a Migraine diary is an easy way to determine what may be triggering an attack, what medications may or may not be working. Last year our 13 year old son was getting more Migraines. We started a Migraine diary and found that chocolate, dehydration and changes in his sleeping patterns could all trigger a Migraine for him. Since we have gotten his triggers under control, he has had fewer attacks. Our Migraine Triggers section has a free dowloadable diary and a host of other information. Click HERE for that.
Please don't lose hope regarding preventive medications. There are over 100 medications used for Migraine prevention! Topamax may not be the best Migraine prevention drug available, but it is the one doctors and patients hear the most about because it is heavily marketed to them.
