Lifelong Migraine Sufferer

By KSM Monday, February 25, 2013
I am new to this forum, and want to introduce myself. I am 31 years old and I have suffered from migraines since before I had the vocabulary to describe my pain. For most of that time they were frequent, occurring every 1-3 months at minimum. In high school I began trying to seek treatment only to be treated as a hypochondriach. I gave up for several years. After college I found a doctor who took me seriously. We've settled on Maxalt as a treatment, though I have no aura and often wake in full blown migraine. In the case that the Maxalt doesn't work, I take a prescription pain medication to make it through the typically three-day cycle. A few years back I had a car accident. In treating the whiplash with massage, I found a significant decrease in frequency, though not severity, of my migraines. Since then I have sought monthly massage. This help more than anything else. Now I am pregnant with my first child. For the first time in years, my migraines are occurring almost bi-weekly. I've increased the frequency of massage, but am struggling to manage the pain on Tylenol (which does next to nothing). I am joining this forum now in the hopes of getting support as I address this new migraine challenge.

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

Congratulations on your first pregnancy it is a very exciting time for you and your family.

I'm glad to hear massage has helped you so much, it is always good to hear positive results.

Some women tend to have fewer Migraine attacks during pregnancy, while others like you are not as lucky. We have an Ask the Clinician question that discusses Migraine and pregnancy which you can continue reading in Managing Migraines during pregnancy.
