Doctor won't listen

By Stephanie Friday, August 24, 2007

What's your opinion on this...

I took Zonegran 2 years ago as a preventive, and it worked very well.  I was weaned off of it because my migraines stopped, and I haven't had any until this month.  I have had 6 migraines this month.  All are triggered by exercise.  My new doctor told me to drink more water and take Ibuprofen.  We also talked about a preventive medication.  I told her that Zonegran had worked very well for me, but since she wasn't familiar with the medication, she prescribed Neurontin instead.  But she wanted me to take Ibuprofen for a week, and then if I still had migraines, to start the Neurontin.  She wouldn't tell me about side effects and told me to ask the pharmacist instead.  I'm not too thrilled about the potential weight gain.  I also read something about gradually increasing dosage, and she never mentioned any of that.  (I had to increase dosage with Zonegran.)

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had trouble with their doctors.  Can't patients ask for a certain medication if it's worked in the past?  I tolerated Zonegran well, but I feel like I'm going to have to beg my doctor to prescribe it.

Any suggestions?

Is it a full blown migraine or is it what is called an "exertion headache"? I had a friend who would get these everytime she started to work out. I think it has something to do with your blood pressure? It's worth looking into.....I'm just saying if that is the only time you are getting them. If not and you feel your doctor is not listening to you - then in the words of Teri "fire his sorry butt" Big Grin Remember - you pay him - it's YOUR pain, YOUR health - YOU are the one who needs to be ok with what goes into YOUR body - you and your doctor should be able to work together on this.

Hope you get it worked out. Keep us posted and feel better!!
