hi risk ob/gyn appt

By msmigraine Tuesday, October 30, 2007
Hi all.  I had an appt with a hi risk ob/gyn doctor today at the mayo clinic in rochester mn.  It went extrememly well.  The doctor said it is ok to have children and that I would actually be able to take my imitrex as needed!  I couldn't beleive it.  Compazine is also an option....so there is hope!  Imitrex is a class c drug, but he seems to think it would be ok to take.  I would only take it as a last resort if I was at work.  If I'm at home I'm not going to risk anything, I'll just suffer through it.  I'm sooooo excited!!!  SarahBig Grin   Thank you to those of you who gave me input before.  I would never have even thought to have a consultation with a hi risk ob to figure this out.

Please, please, PLEASE try not to take anti seizure medications for your migraines while you are pregnant.

My mother was injured before becoming pregnant with me bacuase my idiot brothers left marbles out on the concrete basement floor.  She wound up contracting epilepsy as a result of her injury and took Phenytoin (Dilantin) during her pregnancy with me.  They told her the medication was safer than if she had a seizure.  I was born 2 weeks late with a dilocated shoulder and had tremors and convulsions for several weeks after I was born.  Coincidentally, I AM THE ONLY MEMBER OF MY FAMILY WHO GETS MIGRAINE HEADACHES.

Please do all of the research you can on problems such as Fetal Phenytoin Syndrome, as well as prenatal effects of other drugs, and for how long you should stop taking certain medications before becoming pregnant.  I serve as living proof.  I hope I don't come off as trying to scare you, it's just that based on my life, I'd like to see you take appropriate precautions for the sake of your child.
