Oh my aching head

Hello, my migraines began back in the late 80's, early 90's.  At the time I was diagnosed, I noticed that the pattern seemed to go along with my menstrual cycle.  I would, and still do, get the flashing, jagged rainbows in my eyes, partially blinding me, prior to the actual pain beginning.  Thankfully, most of my headaches were never disablingly painful, but they are becoming increasingly so as I age.  I'm now 53, and even though I'm no longer menstrual, I still get the headaches.  I have used Midrin from the beginning, and have had doctors try to talk me out of using it, and have had me try other medications, but none of them worked on me.  They went back and forth with the generic thing, and now, I'm told none of the generics exist anymore.  What has happened to cause this, does anyone know?  I'd be interested to be informed on this front.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Let me see if I can clear things up for you about Midrin. The generics are not being made any longer, but that doesn't mean it isn't available.

If Midrin isn't doing the trick for you, and you're having more than 2 or 3 migraines a month, it may be time for a daily preventive. There are more than 100 of them. If your doctor isn't comfortable prescribing them (or worse still, doesn't know about them), ask for a referral. A headache specialist is the best, but they're usually booked for months ahead. There may be an available neurologist in your area with an interest in headaches.

As to why. Yours may be partially related to hormones. I didn't have menstrual migraines, and they got a little better with menopause, but they haven't gone away. They've identified a gene associated with migraine, but they're still trying to figure out what exactly goes on during a migraine attack. The why will probably come later. For now, all I want is relief!

I'm certainly one of the lucky ones, I don't get the migraines as bad as some people.  My inlaws are all laid up for days with them.  Trust me, I know, because they would always be visiting me and end up hogging my bed all day in agony.  (As you can tell, I don't  get along with them.)  Anyway, I am praying that when I call the pharmacy today, they'll have my Midrin.
