Out of options?

By Tina Friday, November 09, 2007

Hi,

I am a 28 year old female and have been suffering from migraines since I was 23 years old.  They have progressively worsened through the years.  I have been seeing a neurologist and he saiys we have run out of options.  He tried Depakote, topamax, Lyrica, Inderal, Elavil, klonopin, and all migraine pills such as Maxalt, imitrex, relpax, Midrin, amerge, so on and so forth.  I have been hospitalized a number of time needing Demoral shots and even those don't always work.  I have constant neck and shoulder pain, have tried an accupuncturist, a chiropractor, energy healing, yoga, stress management, cleanses, CoQ10, you name it I have tried it.  I recently tried Botox for the first time and no relief.  I actually got the worse migraine ever since my botox injection.  I had a septoplasty hoping that would help my sinuses.  I don't have any known migraine triggers and have kept plenty of journals.  My question to you is there any hope left?  Is there anything I haven't tried that you can reccomend.  I am currently getting 5-7 migraines per month.  Please help.  Thank you,

Tina

I think it is time to find a new doctor. I know you said you see a neurologist, but is he/she a headache/migraine specialist? I am in the same boat, but there are lots of options out there as far as preventatives go. Way more than you have tried. You should join the forum on here, you will get lots of feedback and information. I am not sure how to post links on here, but this site has a list of doctors, as well. What state are you in?

Well, I really hope to see you in the forum.

Thanks Sherry,

I am definately in the market for a new doctor.  I live in San Diego, CA and looked on the site here for a referral and it looks like there are not any in San Diego but there is one about 1 hour away so I think I will call them.  Thanks for the advice.  Take care,

Tina

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Be assured you have not run out of options. Your doctor is just plain wrong! Time for a new one, but we'll get to that in a minute.

Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!  says it all. There are over 100 medications used to treat Migraine disease. While it may feel like you have tried all there is (shame on the doctor for telling you that) there is hope out there. For instance topamax and depakote are antiseizure medications- they didn't work for you. There are six ot seven others in this group of medications. For example I have been on topamax, zonegran and neurtontin. I didn't have great results with these medications. I am now on Lamictal and it seems to be doing its job. Don't lose hope just your doctor!

Migraine specialists are experts in Migraine disease and headache disorders. This is all they treat, unlike neurologists who treat so many different conditions. Our Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists directory is a great resource. You may not find a specialist in your area, but some people travel quite a distance to see a specialist.
