Topamax and Vitamin Therapy

  • Hi Everyone!!!

I have been battling migraines off and on for a long time.  But just recently I have been having consistent headaches every single day for the past month.  And I know you all know how frustrating that is!!!!!  It totally impedes on your life!  I went to my doctor he put me on Ambtriptlene (sp?)  and that was awful!  I was so exhausted and still had the headahces!!!!  But I just took my first does of Topamax and woke up this morning without a headache for the first time!  I cannot express how gooooood that feels!!!!  It was SO easy to get out of bed and start my day!  Not to mention I am finally acting like myself again!  I read a lot of your posts on Topamax and am glad to see more positives than negatives!  I did wonder though, if any people who are not considered overweight experienced any weight loss.

I also wondered, if any of you have tried what my doctor suggested to me....taking 400mg of B2 vitamins?  He said in a small study many people found the results to be just as good as any of the other medicines.  Has anyone out there tried this vitamin therapy?

I'm glad that the topamax is working for you!

I take topamax and have been on it for some time now. I also take some suppliments, but not B12. I take a multi vitamin, Magnesium (850mgs), and Calcium (1000mgs).

As far as the weight loss, I noticed when I first started on it, I lost about 15 pounds. This was because of the lack of hunger that the topamax gave me....but I've probably gained back 5 of it. I'm also on Amitriptyline along with the Topamax at this time.

Everyone is different when it comes to side effects, that's why they are all potential side effects, they don't happen to everyone.

Good luck with the Topamax! I wish you much success!!!

I have been on Topamax now for almost 3 weeks. I personally have not seen a difference. I wish I could say my appetite has gone away, I wanted to lose weight from it. But I feel the same. I have been having headaches now for going on 1 year. They have put me on 2 different blood pressure medications which supposedly both help with migraines. (I have been on...

(Verapamil & Atenolol) My blood pressure is fine. I am also on Maxalt as needed to help with the pain. I have had CT scans and MRI's. Which so far show nothing.
I don't think I have migraines, why I say that is because I don't have sensitivity to light or sound and I also don't get Aura's. I have seen an internal Dr and a Neurologist. I am about to see an ENT. I have pain 24/7. NOTHING helps. I feel like my head is going to explode all the time, the pressure is behind my eyes and nose and temples. It's like blowing up a ball up as much as you can up until it almost explodes and leave it. That is what my head feels like ALL the time. WHAT CAN THAN BE??????

I've not been on Topamax, but I have tried B2 with Magnesium for my migraines with some success. However, through much trial and error, I have discovered that B6 and folic acid taken together with magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate, citrate or aspertate (NOT OXIDE) works better for me and reduces my migraine frequency, severity and duration significantly. From treating migraines three to five days a week with multiple triptans I am now down to treating once a week using a single Relpax after being on this regime for about 12 weeks. I'm a 46 yr. old peri-menopausal woman and have had migraines since childhood.

I now take daily (1/2 in am, 1/2 in pm):

    100mg Vitamin B-6

    800mcg Folic Acid

    600mg Magnesium Aspertate

    2400mg Omega-3 Fatty acids

    400 IU Vitamin E

One warning about taking high doses of B vitamins, they can result in nerve damage, so if you start getting tingling in your fingers or toes, you should probably cut back on the dose. Also, high levels of magnesium can result in diarrhea, so best to start low and increase slowly, stopping at a dose you can tolerate.

    I hope this helps!

Kiss  Yes, this is a great therapy, as it prevents my migraines also, I was getting them constantly and I have systemic lupus which causes mine, and could not take the imitrex, etc. products as I got mini strokes from it, so Topamax and Vit. B's of all varieties are my savior.  I even get monthly Vit. B-12 shots.  !!!!!

Hi.  First, I am glad you finally got up without a headache.  Just keep in mind that it takes Topamax a minimum of 1 month to work, and upwards of 3 months to work once on a THERAPUETIC dose.  One pill isn't going to do anything.  This isn't to discourage you. I'm telling you this so that if you go back to having daily headaches again, don't...

I'm telling you this so that if you go back to having daily headaches again, don't assume the Topamax isn't working. Give it 3 months at the dose your doctor suggested.  THEN see where you are!  Good luck!

Unfortunately Topomax (the 2 times I tried 25 mg/day) gave me small headaches every single day so I had to stop and then they went back to once or twice a week.  I have also tried Vitamin B2 but only 200 mg/day, not your 400 which is more than what I had read about, but it's worth a try.

I tried the Vitamin B2. It did nothing for me except cost a lot of money. Topamax worked pretty well, until I got a kidney stone and now I can't take it anymore, because it can cause more stones.

I am so happy that you found some relief. I have been in the hospital five times since
Feb and it is very frustrating. They actually don't seem to know what is going on but I now have the diagnosis of status migrainous. Does anyone get as frustrated as I do about the lack of compassion you get from some nurses and doctors? The sad part for me is I am a nurse....
