Frustrated!

By Lorraine Sunday, November 04, 2007

Well it is 1:11am and I am sitting here with a headache. Which seems to be a normal occurrance these days.  Anyway, where do I start? I have been suffering for years with many forms of headaches. Everything from tension headaches, menstrual migraines, migraines, basilar migraines, and more recently migraines with auras and a few times auras with no migraine.  I have been on multiple different meds.  Over the counter meds don't help, prescription medications that sometimes start off working and then stop, or prescription meds that just won't work at all.  The list is long.  So just recently had to change to a new doctor (My doctor I have had for years moved!).  He seems like a good doctor.  My mother and other family members have gone to him for years. So I decided I would go to him also. So he sent me for blood work and a MRI.  So he decided he would put me on nortriptylin. I started off at 10mg for a week and now I am on 20mg.  It takes like what 2 months or something for it to kick in for help on the possible prevention of headaches.  Ok.... So I was like what do I do in the mean time if I get a headache.  He was like at first when he called me on the phone to see how I was tolerating the 10mg; was if you get one call me.  I was like oh ok so when I start getting a headache at 1am; I am suppose to call you!  What are you going to do for me then?  Anyway, I had to take my mother to see him on Friday; so while I was there I needed to get a new rx for the med because he upped the dose and of course the pharmacy won't give you any more than a month supply and for some reason his rx didn't have any refills. I told him that I was still have headaches and that I had a severe menstrual headache a couple of days ago and nothing that I have helps. ( I ended up taking 1 vicodin, 1 feldene,  3 flexeril, and not counting on the motrin that I had to take prior because I was at work! Which none of it woud help me at all!) I want something to have on hand to take if I need it; other than this pill that isn't doing a darn thing yet.  He didn't give me anything! He wants to see if the pill works!!!  This is where I am totally frustrated! Furious   I am NOT a drug seeker and my headaches are real!  Sometimes I don't think doctors, people you work with, or friends understand what it is like to go thru this.  I think unless they experience the pain of these types of headaches; they have NO clue!  So I am suppose to see him in 6 weeks; keep taking these stupid pills at night and hope and pray that I don't get a headache. What am I suppose to do? Go the emergency room if the headache gets so bad that I want to find a gun to get rid of the pain?  I am just sick and tired of getting headaches like every other day that last sometimes days. What am I suppose to do??

Ok I think I vented enough today!  Sorry I think is the pain talking! Haha    Cry

Love this site!

Hi, I am a 41 year old mother of three. I totally understand your frustration and know how painful and hard it is to get through a day feeling so sick!! I have been getting migraines for years but lately they are becoming more frequent. Like you, I often wake up with them at night or in the morning and dread having to teach all day and then deal with being a mom. It is so hard on not only me,m but my family as well. Zomig works for me but I'm afraid that taking them daily( as I have this past week) is going to affect my health in other ways. I'm seriously thinking of taking a medical leave to sort this out. What else have you tried? Acupunture is one avenue I would like to explore. Also, I'm going to request that my doctor send me to  neurologist as these are brain specialists. I have also started running again as I know exercise is important for people who suffer with migraines. I also am at my wits end and can understand what you are dealing with!!!!!!

I have been on several different meds thru out the years.  I have been on Imitrex (didn't work), Inderal (made me lightheaded and dropped by blood pressure), Relpax (gave me chest pains and back spasms),and Axert (which worked, but found out it for my basliar migraines you shouldn't use it).  I have been on Feldene, Flexril, Naproxen, Vicoden, and Motrin for my tension headaches. I can understand and feel for you when you have a migraine and have to work.  I am a 911 dispatcher and it is hard to concentrate when your head is about to explode or you can't see and you have a traffic pursuit and have to be on your game. I haven't been to a specialist yet.  I have been thinking about seeing if my doctor will refer me to one. With my family history of brain aneurysms (My mother and grandmother are one of the few that have survived them) I think going to see someone that actually is well educated on migraines and headaches would actually help me. Just got to find a good one in my area.  I hope that you have found the right meds to help you out.

Hey Lorraine! I'm so sorry to hear you are having to go through this. I understand you frustration and I KNOW the pain is real. Have you been to a headache specialist? I have found that they are more understanding and have more knowledge in treating migraines.

You are not alone. Vent whenever you need to. Take care. You are in my prayers.

Thank you for the encouragement. I really glad that I have found this site. It is nice to be able to talk to people that relate to what you are going thru.  I haven't been to a specialist yet, but I would love to go to one.  I have to look in my area and see if there is any good ones out there.

Lorraine,

i can so feel your pain...i have been dealing with them since i've been 13 years old.  I'm 41 and in day three of a headache!  don't you just love it when you wake up in the morning after taking every drug praying every prayer doing every remedy wondering why exactly karma came around this morning and landed directly on this side of your head once again!

These are some things over the years that have helped me from a daily headache to about 4 a month.  I have been to a physical therapist who taught me a great deal about my headaches (look for someone who specializes in headaches)  I sleep on a special pillow as to not put pressure on the nerves in my neck.  I am on a daily dose of 150mil. of topamax.  I also take birth control pills on a constant basis so i don't get a period!  This keeps my hormone levels at a constant to avoid the menstral migraine.  I also avoid all alcohol!!!! I feel that alcohol is a definite trigger so i avoid it all together it's just not worth it.  So after doing all of this i still get about 4 or so a month around the full and new moons (not sure why) but it's better than every day.  i hope i was able to help in some way.

I am really interested in what kind of special pillow you use.  Didn't know there was something out there.  I always have neck and basliar pain.  I was on the depo shot for 12 years and didn't have a period. It was the greatest thing.  I didn't have pms or menstrual migraines.  I am going to have to look up under my insurance and see what specialists are out there and ask my doctor.  It is funny on the days that you wake up and don't have a headache it is like you can do anything.  You that the Lord above for letting you be pain free!
