Treatments I am receiving

By Donnavs Thursday, February 09, 2012
I have had migraines for 40+ years that have developed into chronic daily migraines that are debilitating. I am receiving Radio Frequency Ablation treatments at Johns Hopkins Hospital. If these treatments are not successful the doctor said I am eligible for a Neurotransmitter and/or a cliical trial for new device that was invented by a doctor at Duke University Hospital. Does anyone have knowledge or experience with any of the treatments and their success level?

Dear Nancy, Thank you for the welcome to Health Central Migraine Community.  I'm looking forward to any insight the site can provide.  I hope someone has experience with Radio Frequency Ablation, Neurotransmitter or the device invented at Duke University Hospital awaiting FDA approval.

Blessings to all my fellow migraneurs.

I had 2 neurotransmitters implanted.  The first time the electrical leads gell off the nerve (called "lead migration.")  They unhooked it but they left the wire in my back and the transmitter also.  When it was time to hook it up again, the wire had poked through my skin and I got a pseudomonas infection.  They had to take everything out.  We waited another year to hook it up again but they used a different hookup and it never worked/.  It was made by Medronics. The docs tried to blame the loose lead on me!!! The transmitter is at the base of my spine and I am afraid of yet another operation.  The docs did no followup after the initial few months.

What is this trial you are talking about?

I don't know much about the trial. A doctor at Duke University Hospital invented a new device awaiting FDA approval. The next time I go to Hopkins I'll see if I can get more information. I know that it's less invasive than a neurotransmitter because it's smaller. When it's approved I would probably have to go to Duke in North Carolina. The doctor at Hopkins said he doubted Duke would allow Hopkins to participate in the trial because of the competition aspect. Thank you for sharing your experience with the neurotransmitter. It sounds horrendous.
