Living with a headache every day of my life!!

By Takka Davis Wednesday, October 17, 2007
I am 30 years old and I have been living with migraines since I was about 12 years old.  I have been on soooooooooooo many meds that I can't even name them.  I have many CT Scans and MRI's.  I recently went to a new Neurologist and he prescribed me Topamax.  I've been on it for a week.  I can't really tell a difference yet, but I'm giving it time.  The first week I was taking 25mg at night, the 2nd week I am taking 25mg at night and 25mg in the morning the 3rd week I will take one 25mg in the morning and 2 25mg at night, and the 4th week I will take 100 mg at night.  I hope it works.  I have read about the side effects, and I thank God I don't have them yet. I know I'm on a low dose, but at least I don't have them that bad.  I do have the loss of appetite, and sodas taste like cough syrup.  I have just a little tingling in my feet and toes, that doesn't last that long.  I feel a little disoriented at times.  And I can't think of the right words to say, but it doesn't compare to the headaches that have haunted me for almost my entire life.  I've complained of headaches to my family and friends so much that I had started to wonder if it was just in my mind.  I am also about 30 lbs over weight and I'm hoping that this will help me come off some of the weight also.  I have noticed that Topamax makes me feel kind of mellow and nonchalant.  My students don't get on my nerves like they use to.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

It is so exhausting living in pain everyday. Hopefully Topamax will help reduce your Migraine frequency. An important thing to remember is that side effects are potential, they don't happen to everyone all the time. Sometimes these potential side effects disappear after we reach the optimal dose. Having said that if topamax is not the right medication for you, not to worry there are many more Migraine preventive medications to try.

Hi Takka, my name is Kaylene and like you I have suffered chronic headaches & migraines all my life (45yrs). I was so pleased to hear that the drug topamax is working for you. I wish we had access to that particular one here in Australia, probably another 10 years give or take. I suppose anything that gives you a little relief is worth it, but I'm always worried about side effects of some of these so-called wonder drugs. I was told 7 years ago that I have significant liver damage and to stop drinking. I looked at my doctor in absolute shock, I don't drink at all! But the medical profession (in their infinite wisdom) would not admit the damage has occurred because of long term medication. So I checked myself into our local pain clinic and spent the worst 3 weeks of my life coming off all the horrendous medications they had been feeding me. I wish I could tell you that I don't need drugs  anymore, I still crave the harder ones (morphine, methodone), but am now on anti seizure ones, following a stroke I had on my 42nd birthday (i really had my heart set on jewellery, but what can you do). I really hope your medication helps and would chat sometime.

Cheers

Kaylene

I am so sorry to hear that about your liver.  This med is also and anti seizire med.  And it also has its side effects.  Even if I'm not noticing any now.  All meds eventully will effect us in some way if we take them long term.  I don't even know if I'me spelling words right.  I thought when I was reading about people taking this med and forgetting how to spell, I thought they were just exagerating.  I went up on my dose this week.  I am at 75mg.  I feel a little more dizzy.  I can't sleep that good at night.  I go back to my neuro on the 7th of Nov.  I will ask for something to help me sleep.  I also have Relpax, it is only taken before I actually get a migraine.  I had to take one Sunday.  I knocked me out in 2 mins.  I am so glad I wasn't at work.  My neuro didn't even tell me that it would knock me out like that.  I hope this new med works for you!
