Well it all started after giving birth to my son. About one week after having a C-section i had this terrible headache and was extremly nauseus and sleepy. I could not care for my baby. I lived with migrines with out medication for about 3yrs. It was about 2006-2007 when i decided to see a specialist...

Maxalt works well, but I found it gave me a tightening in the chest that was concerning. I switched to Amerge, which works great and lasts longer than Maxalt. However, it's very expensive, so now I use Imitrex for most migraines (not the really severe ones). It's not as strong as Amerge, and doesn't last as long, but it does knock out the headache faster than the others.

    For what it's worth.

I take medication as soon as I begin getting the headache. Usually my vision blurs first (a type of aura for me), and then the pain starts a few hours later. If I take the medication early, the migraine will go away faster. If I wait too long, nothing works.

Most migraine medications wear off (for me anyway) after 12-24 hours, and then the headache returns. After 2 days of being on medication, I'm usually okay, but sometimes the headache is bad enough that it comes back again on the 3rd day. Then I just have to go cold turkey and wait it out (because after 2-3 days of being on medication, the medication itself can cause the headache to "rebound"). Usually by the end of the 3rd day it will subside on its own without medication.

Amerge seems to be the strongest medication, and lasts the longest (24 hours), but it doesn't always get rid of the headache completely, especially if the trigger was severe (for me it's onions). Severe triggers bring on 3-day headaches.

Oh i see, Ive been on Maxalt for about 3 yrs. They usully work if i take them as soon as i feel the migraine comming. Once the migraine is gone, it dosent come back, well atleast that day. Lately i have had many migraines, but sometimes i go cold turkey since i am prescribed 9 Maxalt pills a month so i try to spread them apart. You mention that onions triggers your migraines, i also belive thats one of my triggers. What else triggers your migrianes? Any tips you can give me :)

My "onion" headaches are by far the worst, very violent. Other triggers, some of which have only recently started to bother me, are: red wine, chocolate, any processed meats (like coldcuts/ham), peanuts, MSG, and sometimes peppers.
