going gluten-free - for real this time

By MaxJerz Thursday, January 03, 2008

Back when I first started seeing my acupuncturist in November, she told me to cut all wheat, dairy and sugar out of my diet. I balked at first, not wanting to do it. I was raised Italian, after all, and wheat is a staple in my diet. I did cut down my wheat consumption in high school, when I found out I have a strong intolerance to it (and a number of other foods). That's when my mom introduced me to the "rotation diet": I didn't necessarily eliminate any problem foods, just ate them less often. I've more or less followed this diet for the past ten years.

I think the time has come to make the jump and completely eliminate gluten, dairy and sugar. All three intolerances have a strong genetic run in my family (eggs, too). I think it's worth it to give this diet an honest try. If nothing else, I may lose some weight, which would not be a bad thing.

My problem these days is it seems like anything and everything will trigger a migraine. Stackable food triggers (or suspected triggers) currently include: MSG, sugar, soy sauce, salt, wheat, dairy. There are others I can't think of right now. I've already made the switch to organic meat (which tastes a lot better anyway).

I think that I just need to jump in with both feet and give this diet a real chance. I have migraine pain every single day. If cutting out these foods will cut down my head pain even a little, it's worth it to me right now.

Any words of encouragement are appreciated. As soon as I tell myself I can't have something, then it's all I can think about.Pinch

My sister who also has migraines seems to mainly has food triggers.  Her triggers were very clearly identified when she went on a weight loss diet that eliminated  wheat and sugar out of the early part of the diet.  Not only did she lose weight, but she had no migraines.  Within a very short time of adding the sugar and wheat back into her diet, the migraines returned.

Give it a try.  You have nothing to lose but the pain and gosh, maybe some weight!!

Thanks, Cindy! You are right, I really don't have anything to lose.Big Smile

My elimination diet is supposed to be wheat-free. So far, I've eaten a lot LESS wheat, but I haven't stopped completely. It's so hard. Take this evening...I made this excellent lentil soup for myself and my husband, but it just didn't seem right not to pair it with a bread product. (It's easy for me to use him as an excuse to eat something I shouldn't.)

Tomorrow is another day. Perhaps I can avoid wheat then. I will try. I can tell a difference in how I feel even eating LESS wheat...I need to remember that.

I am so sorry you are hurting every day. I'll be hoping that reducing gluten helps you some. And next time I'm about to mindlessly stuff bread into my mouth, I'm gonna think of you and remember that we're both struggling to get better. Roll Eyes

Aww, thanks Suzanne. It is hard to completely cut out wheat. I love bread and pasta. LOVE. I've found that after the first week of going cold-turkey it's been a little easier. I cheated on Friday and had a delicious chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven, and between the sugar and/or wheat my migraine got a lot worse in the afternoon. Hmm.

I've managed to substitute other foods for wheat products in most cases. Instead of bread, I use corn tortillas. Instead of pretzels for a snack, I eat rice cakes with peanut butter. Instead of pasta, I eat gluten-free pasta. This has helped me a lot. Even just not having the food in my house helps. DBF has agreed to help police my eating habits so he yells at me (nicely) if I try to eat anything I shouldn't.

The first few days are the hardest, but as you get used to the new diet it gets easier. I try to focus on the positive - how much more fresh produce I can eat instead of wheat - to help me stick to it. And if I cheat, I cheat, and I don't beat myself up about it.

Good luck to you. The elimination diet is a hard one to do, but I think you can do it! Happy
