Somthing similar to gabapentin without weight gain?

By OTgrl Wednesday, May 02, 2012

Gabapentin was working faily well...decreased frequency and intensity.  I also see a psychiatrist for mood swings and she put me on lamitcal, 200mg now.  My NP from the headache center decided to try going off the gabapentin and see if the lamictal could be both a preventative and a psych med for me, decreasing the amount of medications I am on.  I am now all the way off the gabapentin and only on lamictal.  My migraines have increased this month (or last month rather).  I'm bummed.  Gabapentin made me gain weight, and with a history of an eating disorder, it's not an easy thing for me.  Is there something similar to gabapentin (also generic) that doesn't cause weight gain?  Obviously, if there isn't anything like it, I will go back on the gaba.  I realize that...just looking into my options.  Thank you for listening.

I know a lot of people are really down on topiramate but I take a very low dose of it and it keeps the migraines away. And it has the amazing side effect of taking your appetite away. I take 12.5 mg a day because that's all my body can tolerate. A lot of docs will start you out on a much higher dose but I found I do really well on this little bit. On top of that I take 400 mg of B2 every day plus 500 mg of magnesium, plus black cohosh. Good luck and I hope you feel better.
