I just found this site. I am 49 yr, female.  About 10 years ago the headaches got bad enough to complain to the dr, shortly after having a complete hysterecomy.  I am diagnosed with, MOH, and weekly migraines superimposed onto CDH's.  Luckily I own my business so I cannot be fired for chronic sick days.  I don't go to the office for months at a time.   I am a tax accountant. I feel that I do NOT  have a stressful life, well except during tax season.  My kids are all grown up, my husband is very very supportive in all ways.  I emphasize the NOT stressful, because everyone tries to keep blaming stress for my HA's.

I am concentrating on the MOH now.  I have given myself permission to take the next 3 months off.  This is so that I can try to just live with the HA pain and not feel like I must get to work.  It is very hard to concentrate when you have HA's ranging from levels 4-8, day after day, hour after hour. I have tried potloads of meds, hence the MOH; am currently taking lots of vits and minerals rec by the dr.; natural Progesterone(another book said this was my problem). I am told that the MOH withdrawal/detox can take several weeks to several months.  Is this true?  I honestly don't know if I can take the sharp increase in incessant pain, insomnia, and fatigue for several months.

As with everyone, I am open to all the help I can get.  thanx  ShelleyW

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Medication Overuse Headache occurs when we take certain prescription and OTC medications more than 2-3 days a week. The problem is no Migraine prevention medication will work if we have MOH. For more information on MOH, click HERE.

Also, to add to what Nancy said, your doctor may be able to help you through the MOH. There may possibly be something he/she can do to make the pain less, well painful.

As you read in the article, when in Rebound or Medication Overuse Headache, you should not take any type of pain medication, OTC's, Triptans...that is why it is best for you to let your doctor know if you are still dealing with this. From  your post it sounded like he diagnosed you a while ago and you have not seen him since? I'd give him a call.

Hope you are feeling better soon!!!

I am seeing the neurologist on a regular basis.  I had to finish, struggle through, my tax season, before I could even attempt to stay off as many rescue and abortive meds as possible.  So, I just started on June 1, 2008.  I get Botox injections every 3 months, I have only had 2 sets, so far. I pack my head in ice on a daily basis.  I get trigger point injections with lidocaine and ephinephrine on the very  bad days.  But.... the headaches on non-stop, 24/7, truly.  I am never not in pain.  As everyone has stated, trying to work and be in constant pain, is very difficult, if not impossible.

What I have read about the MOH,  so far, is that it is going to be a very long, painful process; do you have any magic tricks to help ease and speed up the MOH detoxification process?

After the MOH goes away, then I understand that I am left with just episodic migraines, and CDH and/or transformed migraines, is this true?

 thanx, shelley

That I know of, once the medication overuse headache episode is over, then you would be able to go back to normal (what's normal, right!) migraines (whatever your diagnosis is).

As far as tips to get through MOH - Sounds like you are doing what I did, Ice packs! I'm  sorry yours is lasting so long!
