Last Saturday I was reading on the couch and I saw a black 'mass' out of the corner of my eye. It was roughly the size of a large cat and when I tried to look directly at it, it looked as though it went under the foot rest.
I've had visual aura before, preceding a migraine. The auras are usually bright star lights, or flickering lights, or graying/dimming light.
But this was black and solid, no transparency. And a migraine did not follow. It's only happened that one time.
This is strange for me, so I'll definitely mention this at my Dr's appointment next week.
Could this be a common visual aura?

Yes, it could be aura without Migraine aura, BUT it could be other things as well.
Sometimes, depending on the symptoms, only a doctor can tell the difference. That's why it's important to contact your doctor when you have symptoms that are different, severe, or frightening.
This is a good question to ask your doctor when you see him, or before if it happens again. He or she can review your usual symptoms with you and tell you what other things may or may not being going on. It is possible to have Retinal Migraine without headache, but that is not real common. You can find more information in Retinal Migraine - The Basics.
Please come back and let us know what your doctor says, ok?

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your reply. The Dr said it probably was an ocular migraine and that not all migraines have head pain. It made me feel a lot better to hear that! The retinal migraine article helped. It makes so much sense and kept me from worrying before my appointment. Thank you.
