There has to be something else.

By Leigh Sunday, May 04, 2008

My migraines started in 2000.  At first I thought that it was the stress of my mother's illness and subsequent death.  The intermitant eating and lack of sleep played havock on my body.  I lost 30 lbs without trying and couldn't afford it really.  I went from 5' 8" and 140 to 111 lbs in 2 months.

But after my mother's passing in June my life got back to normal which included my weight.  By December I was back to "normal" but I had developed intolerance for alcoholic beverages.  Kind of a bummer at times but I'm now the DD when my friends and I go out.  That's ok because I keep my friends safe.  Since my mother died of lung cancer and I was a smoker at the time I gathered all of my strength and quit smoking after 26 years.

Oddly enough the migraines continued and seemed to get worse as I gave up my vices.  I stopped socially drinking and the migraines increased in frequency.  I gave up smoking and they increased in frequency again and intensity.  As the years have gone by they only get worse.  They occur out of nowhere at least three times a month.  But on top of that I've found that everytime I am in the heat for any length of time I get a migraine.  I'm talking about 15 minutes.  I can't even mow my yard anymore because I will end up with a migraine, vomiting my guts out, the rest of the day.  And that is with taking a "preventative" and then two Frova.  Imitrex does nothing for me.  Relpax works but I feel like I have the flu with the muscle and bone aches.  The Frova does the same thing but with a little less flu like symptoms.  I have to lay down for anything to work though.  At work I have a fan at my desk that runs most of the time.  Anytime the temperature rises to 74 or higher I have to turn on my fan.  My co-workers are cold at anything 74 or below.  I've started gaining weight because I'm unable to do work around the yard and I can't work out because I'm getting overheated in a few minutes.  Hard to get the "fat burning zone" going or my heart rate up when I can't get hot.

I realize that I live in the wrong state, Texas and the wrong city in Texas, Houston.  The humidity is horendous making the heat worse than the actual temperature.  My insurance provides 9 pills per month. You've got to be kidding me!  I take two pills with each migraine! And if I have to do anything in "the heat" each day...then each day I would run out in 4 1/2 days!  What am I to do for the reast of the month?

Does anyone know why there is a limit to the number of pills you can receive per month?  Does it jack with your blood pressure or something

I have to find something else, something better to deal with the nausea, pain...something that allows me to enjoy the outdoors again.  I can't even go to my son's baseball games or tennis matches.  I don't want to be forced to move to Alaska!

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Yes, there things available that can help reduce your Migraine frequency, try not to lose hope!

Triptans, like Frova and Relpax are used to abort a Migraine attack - not prevent them. If you have more than 3 Migraines a month, it is time for a preventive medication. Another problem with taking too many triptans, more than 2-3 days a week, is Medication Overuse Headache- more on that later.

There are over 100 medications used to prevent Migraine disease, a genetic neurologic disease. You will see the whole list in this article: Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

Medication Overuse Headache occurs when we take certain OTC and/or prescription medications, more than 2-3 days a week. Preventive medications will not work while we have MOH, period. The only way to stop MOH is to "cold-turkey" the offending medication. It isn't real pleasant but can be done. Two summers ago I struggled with MOH and after about twelve days I felt better.
