Now that I am not on a preventative I can reflect on my current condition as in compared to the months on various preventatives.  I have run through quite a few of them in all the categories; beta blockers, cacium blockers, anti-depressents, anti-seizure, anti-inflamatories, a sleeping pill, a water pill and of course the combo of some of these.  It seems to me that all these prevetatives, exluding Depakote, have had an effect on my migraine cycle, although none have been effective.  I exclude Depakote entirely because it had no effect and made me quite ill.  It seems to me many of these preventatives would work for some of the migraine symptoms, and give you side effects in their place.  When my migraines first became a problem they did so with a fury... I would not only be nauseas, but I would just throw up constantly, I had auras that would completely obscure my vision and symtpoms that also included loss of hearing.  I am now getting some of that back, including that horrible nausea, not a symtpom I have missed.  Some preventatives got rid of the nausea, but killed my appitite.  Some got rid of the visual aura, but increased the numbness or tingling, and did nothing for the double vision or blurring.  And since my blood pressure is low normal some caused problems with low blood pressure and a slow heart rate.  Some seemed to help with frequency, but not at all with acuteness, others seemed to be just the opposite.  Never could I get below that ten day stretch a month.  Some decreased the frequency of morning migraines, while others increased the chances of morning migraines, but none helped with the tendency to get migraines in the late afternoon or night.  And yet it is worse without any preventative, which is sad really, that no matter what I do I cannot have a month where there is even just a few days of migraines.

Although I can say that now with the daily migraines, more actute ones, and the symptoms going wild, I am about ready to take anything.  it certainly seems though that they just re-arrange when you get them, and sometimes the type or the symtpoms, without actually impoving anything.  By far the most effective has been Topamax, for getting rid of the visual aura and the nausea.  The sleeping pill, while not a regular preventative, has been a great help simply because I have a sleeping disorder because of Fibromyalgia and it has decreased my morning migraines a little, but most importantly, when I have a migraine at night and cannot take the abortive, it gets me to sleep.  I have an anti-inflammatory and a water pill I take for PMS sysmtoms, symptoms which greatly increase my chances of getting a migraine and the severity of migraine symptoms... because nausea for PMS and nausea from migraines combine into making a person extremely ill.  And so those two are great for decreasing my overall misery during that time of the month.  Given I can be incapacitated by PMS pain and nausea, this is a good thing no matter what.
