This is my first share post-so here goes!! I've been lurking on this site for a long time-at least over a year and this is the first time I've decided to post anything. I was getting at least 2 migraines a week, with some lasting 3 days. On top of that, I was also extremely tired all the time. I felt that without caffeine, I couldn't function. My neuro decided in november to do a sleep study and told me to stop caffeine (I had a really bad addiction to Diet Mt. Dew). So I had no caffeine the day of the sleep study and according to it I slept semi-normal-no reasons to show any fatigue. The MSLT test for narcolepsy didn't show anything either-well I knew that wouldn't because I can't nap on demand and when I know there is people watching me. In my December follow up I finally decided that I was going of cold turkey on the caffeine-I know you're not supposed to do it that way-he even gave me a taper plan, but there was no way I could follow it!! Since my migraines were increasing and the fatigue was still an issue we added Depakote and Nuvigil to the mix and also he wanted to do a nerve block but my ins. wouldn't pay for it that day. So, I had to sched a nerve block for jan-but with different insurance-I don't think they paid for it but I still haven't got a bill. The results from that lasted only about a month. Then the craziest year in Arizona happens-rainy, rainy, rainy-more rain this year than all of last year. Well, that means crazy allergies for me come spring time. Feb. was an ok month, then March hits-allergies off the wall, which I think makes my migraines worse, cause I don't sleep as well and am constantly stuffed up. Come to think of it, this time last year, I had a migraine that lasted around 23 days and was put on a steroid taper, went to the er in the middle of it for the first time-I usually try to wait it out-I was there for 9 hours waited 3-had my first nerve block, added another preventative, all while my doc was on vacation!!
That is just the background!! Now, here for April present. About 2 or 3 weeks ago I get a migraine that lasts 5 days. The next week, I get 3 different migraines 3 days in a row, aborted or shall I say partially aborted by various triptans (yes I did wait 24 hours between the different ones) 1st-gen. imitrex, next 2 zomig nasal spray. These are on top of the background headache/migraine/nausea I have all the time.
This week I go to my dr. who is not very happy, says you are young, shouldn't be living like this (I just turned 30 this year)-he was going to put me on bed rest and try some meds for 3 days, but that hasn't really worked in the past and I also am having some weird symptoms-shaking/etc-he was able to see this on the neuro exam and some other things of concern. I told him that wouldn't work since I have to work~I don't know how but I do manage to work through all of this-and that's about all I'm managing to do right now. So he through me for a loop-he told me he was going to admit me on Monday for 3 days. Bloodwork, mri, I think DHE-I'm on the medical profession and I was so shocked by the whole deal that I wasn't even paying attention. I know I shouldn't be freaking out but I've only been to the ER once in my adult life, never to the hospital as an inpatient-and never would I be the one footing the bill!! I didn't even have a primary care doc until this week~I know strange-I have a neuro but not a pcp!! I guess I'm just scared that this little hospital stint won't make it better-my neuro waited until monday because that's when he will be there on service-so he can/will be making most of the shots-change some preventatives-who knows.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!
I am glad to see you've found us, but so sorry you need to be hear. It sounds like it might be a good idea to do a three day hospital in-patient as your doctor has suggested. That way he can find out what's going on, and do an DHE protocol to break your current Migraine cycle. This article, IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines talks about the different kind of IV infusions when Migraine cycles are particulary hard to break.

Here's an update on how the hospital went-not so sure. I was there for 4 days and got DHE, Solu-medrol, diazepam, and phenergan for nausea basically around the clock. I was discharged on Thursday and left with a slight headache but not a migraine. I was so wiped out on Friday that I slept all day!! Saturday and Sunday were ok-I felt like I actually finally could function like a normal person, despite a slight lingering headache and a little nausea that my phenergan could take care of.
Then Monday hit. I had to go back to work, I don't know what happened or what I did but I got one of the worst migraines I've had in months. I usually don't get an aura, so I had no idea that this one was coming (but I do get flashing lights and stuff during a migraine). It basically built up all day before I realized it was as bad as it was so by the time I got home from work I tried my Zomig Nasal, nothing. The nausea was so bad I was doing everything I could to try not to throw up. The bugger lasted all day yesterday, and is still with me today at a pretty high pain level 7-8 (wed-I guess it's thursday now). So I guess, that would be the 72 hour mark-the reason my doctor admitted me in the first place. I have a follow up with him Thurday at 2:00. I'm just frustrated/discouraged right now and feel that I won't ever get out of this crazy cycle that I'm in.
