What is Migraine?

By FlyfreeIzzie Monday, April 21, 2008

What is Migraine?

You look at my face

What do you see?

            A slight frown...

            hand on head...

You listen to sounds

What do you hear?

            A slight holding of breath...

            a muffled groan

What does it all mean?

‘What's going on," you ask...

            "I have a migraine" I say

"Just take some aspirin... it will go away"

And on you go about your day

A tear rolls down my face

            For the lack of understanding

I flinch and shutter from the bright lights around

But what about the inside...

The inside...

Do you really want to know?

The inside...

Is CHAOS

Blood vessels constricting

Pounding of drums

There is no escape!

Time insufferable!

Running from sound, running from light

The stomach spins

Twists

Skin is clammy

Trembling with pain

When WILL this private war END?

No one can tell

No medicine will work

No time ending it gives

Whenever migraine takes flight

"It's just a headache" some say...

"Just take some aspirin"

It will go away

            They speak so easily

            But they do not know

            The incredible possession

                                    Of Migraine taking hold.

Written very well ... from a true sufferer ... I used to worry my poor father to death with my when I was a teen cause he would come and ask every half hour if it was any better ... I would say please stop asking its making it worse and he could never understand. THey are viscious. If I had a dollar for every trip to the ER I made with a migraine ... or for mine they call them "Cluster Headaches".

thank you for your comment! :)

It's so true that people who don't have migraines or any of its versions like Cluster Headaches seem to just NOT get it.

One time, I had a migraine and a friend of mine whose daughter has the same disease as I STILL could not understand why the 'headache' was so bad. I found out she thought I was making it worse than what it was until as karma would have it, she for the first time, got one the following day. She than exclaimed that she couldn't believe how bad it was and how she thought I was being a baby!!! WOW, I was so taken aback... I have to say thaqt I was GLAD she got to have one!.

Cluster headaches are horrible!! I have had a couple but rarely and as a person with chronic pain, I MUCH rather have my chronic pain than deal with Cluster or other migraines really. The ones I have are more debilitating to me than my daily chronic pain issues!

I bet it was very annoying to have your father coming in all of the time... im sure he thought he was helping and it's like leasve me aloneeeeeee.

ANyways, I appreciate that you took the time to read my poem and comment. Makes me feel good.
