Anti-nausea med helped my headache?

By MicheleS Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I woke up today with a headache (again). I came to work hoping I could beat it.

As the morning went on, my head hurt worse. I took 2 Tylenol (I'm working on quitting this, already quit Excedrin 2+ weeks ago! yay me!) and it didn't help a darn bit. I tried eating a bit of something as my tummy was beginning to feel nauseous. I thought, and I guess it could be, from the Tylenol on an empty stomach.

So I took a melt-under-your-tongue Zofran (I was ill with an stomach/intestinal virus a couple of weeks ago and they prescribed Zofran to help). I would say within an hour or so, my head pain was a lot less. At least I could open my eyes at my desk.

I ate a bit more and, so far, I feel okay to finish the day.

I'm new to the website and haven't had a chance to check - but has anyone had this experience, treating a headache with anti-nausea medicine?

Thanks for listening.

Hi MichelleS,

I'm not sure I've had your exact experience, but I have found that treating the nausea of a migraine first has allowed me to treat the headache part with my migraine drugs without then throwing them up. (Sort of a cost saving measure!) Also, I've found that treating the nausea of a migraine that otherwise wouldn't budge at least made me feel better. I still had the head pain, but that became much more manageable without the debilitating nausea.

I've since found, since starting magnesium and other supplements, that the onset of my migraines is much slower and less severe, so I now have a much longer window of time to treat before nausea takes over.

Glad to hear you've discovered something that might be helpful to you!

I appreciate your insight. Since I just recently decided that I have had enough of my headaches, I haven't gotten to the magnesium and other supplements part yet. Heck, I just stopped the Excedrin in the last two weeks. I want to be sure that I'm not getting rebound headaches. The Tylenol that made me feel nauseous is finished too. Zofran surprised me and I'll pay more attention next time.

That is interesting I have been wondering the same thing. Recently, I was sent home with some zofran after being treated with DHE in the ER. (IV DHE always makes me vomitted horribly for5 min. but it works)  In an attempt to stay out of the ER I now can give myself shots of DHE. One time I had to wait for the DHE, I was vomitting and sick at home with the pain so I took a Zofran and Stadol and fell asleep. Miraculously I woke up pain free. It seemed at the time the zofran had something to do with it?????? I don't really know but it must have some effect.

Thank you for your comment. It made me feel less crazy. I wasn't sure if anti-nausea meds could make the pain less severe. But, if I'm not the only one, I will pay better attention next time.

Hi.  No, you're not the least bit crazy.  I know that at our ER when you go in with a Migraine they often try a good strong antinausea drug first and wait a while to see if that works by itself before they add anything else to it.  Sometimes it does, if you've gone in early enough in the Migraine and haven't let it get away on you.  I have no idea why it works - but I would never question a doctor who can make my Migraine go away!!!
