First of all, don't stop or reduce your Topa without your doctor's knowledge and consent. This is important for your safety. If you feel you can't tolerate it, and need to stop it before next week's appointment, call the doctor.
Second, remember there are over 100 preventives you can try. If you can't tolerate Topa, there are plenty of other options. You may even be able to tolerate other anti-seizure meds. Some people print the list of preventives from this site and take it with them to the doctor.
Third, remember that the side effects may well diminish with time. If you can stick it out for a while, you may be glad later that you did. (However, I'm one of those who had to give up on Topa in less than a week; I just couldn't deal with the sleep deprivation I was experiencing.)
Fourth, take care of yourself! Work with your doctor. Listen to your doctor. Expect your doctor to listen to you and take your concerns seriously.
Angie,
I wonder if you could tell me if these crying spells went away after you stopped the Topamax? Also, I wonder- how soon? I too have experienced what you describe here, however I am sure that I have been on the Topamax for longer- November 2006. Oddly, most all symtoms I am now having are really becoming strong and unbearable in the past few months. I hope to learn from your information. Thanks.
Hi!
Give the topamax a chance--if you can. I was the SAME way for the first week after I started it. I cried at the end of Fred Claus and I DON'T cry at movies. I know it must have been starting that drug that did it. I was either crying or very quiet and depressed. I felt much better after about five-six days on topamax (the crying/down in the dumps feeling) went away. I have had one migraine in the past two weeks since starting it, so it hasn't fully kicked in yet, but all the tiredness and mood swings have all but melted away. I'm hoping the preventative qualities will FULLY kick in soon!
Hope you feel better!
