FIORINAL

By nykolaia Friday, September 12, 2008

I have suffered with migraines, blurred vision, nausea for over 40 years.  I have learned to accept the fact that I was born with a genetic disposition for them and refuse to let them control my life.  When I awake with blurred vision, severe pain in my right eye and nausea, I immediately take Fiorinal (an old time- prescription med) which is the only drug that has ever given me relief. It works within an hour.   I have used this since I was 18.   It alleviates the pain and relaxes the anxiety experienced.  I always carry this medication with me.  Always check with your physician first, before trying any new drug.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Migraine is a genetic neurologic disease and it is great you haven't let them control your life. That's the good news. We've had some not so good news recently that people with a long history and/or frequent Migraine attack are at increased risk for  brain damage. "Silent brain damage," or the kind that doesn't have symptoms. What is important about this information is not to scare people, but try and reduce the number of Migraine attacks they have. For more information continue reading: Yes, Migraines Can Cause Brain Damage.

Fiorinal is a combination pain medication containing aspirin, butalbital, and caffeine and if taken more than two to three days a week can create another type of headache called Medication Overuse Headache, MOH, formerly called rebound headache. The problem with MOH is no Migraine preventive medication will work and you sentence youself to pain til you stop the MOH cycle. Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires has more information for you.

Thank you for your commnets;   As I stated, I  must taper off gradually after a few days of usage.   The butalbital is very effective in my case.   My neurologist is happy that this med works for me.  He also perform periodic MRI's to check my brain and there are no scars from the migraines.   I find the key to this complex brain disease, is to roll with the punches and then pick yourself right up again.  This has never prevented me from traveling, working, etc.

Dear nykolaia,

Have you tried all of the Migraine abortive medications such as the triptans -- Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt? What about Migranal Nasal Spray, DHE-45, and Midrin?

The goal should be to stop the Migraine as quickly as possible, and Fiorinal cannot do that. It can only mask the pain for a few hours, and does nothing for any other Migraine symptoms.

Also, because of the potential for medication overuse headache, Migraine experts recommend that Fiorinal not be taken more than two or three days a week. Butalbital compounds have so many potential problems that they have been totally removed from the market in Europe.

Hi:  I have used Fiorinal for 40 years; my MRI's show no scars from my migraines.  The Fiorinal controls my pain and nausea, etc., within 1/2 to 1 hr.   I could not ask for anything better as far as pain control.   The new meds are not an option for myself.  The nice part is that I use the meds for no longer than 3 days; then I stop without any probems of rebound, etc.

I used to suffer from very severe migraines... but they tapered off in my forties and I haven't used medication for over a decade. However, when I did suffer, Fiorinal was like a wonder drug. If I felt the headache forming, and I took one Fiorinal, the attack aborted. If I already had a full blown migraine, the Fiorinal was not very effective. I was always very careful with the drug... a prescription of 50 pills would typically last a year. There might be newer, better drugs, but this one was my magic bullet for 20 years.
