Hi there.  I'm a senior in high school and am fighting with the school district in Colorado to get a 504 plan because I am starting to struggle in school.  They say my grades are too high and that I do not miss enough school, which is all based on last year.  In the past three weeks I ...

    Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Your senior year shouldn't be so difficult, sweetie. Could I ask you a few questions first, then I'll give you lots of information, ok? Are you under the care of a Migraine specialist? Hemiplegic Migraine (HM) is a rare form of Migraine disease best treated by an expert, the Migraine/headache specialist. This is so important because there is more evidence that Migraines can cause silent brain damage. Migraineurs need to reduce the number of attacks and receive the best care possible. To do this it is imperative to work with a good doctor. We have two in CO, you can click HERE to look at our patient recommended specialist directory. Can your parents take you? This doctors may not be close to you, but it will be worth the travel so you can carry on with your senior year and move on to the college of your choice.

As far as a 504 plan, take a look at this site. It has a template you can modify(I think)our information and your doctors to sort of fill in the blanks. On our forum (more informaton on that below) we have a discussion on this topic in this folder you may find helpful.

Thank you.  I am actually seeing a pediatric neurologist because they started when I was in 8th grade.  I outgrew them but I was in a car crash last year and then had another episode.  Of all those symptoms, there are only two I have not experienced.  I go back and see him on Tuesday.  This year I will probably have to switch doctors since I am turning 18 and I will tell my parents about these two Migraine specialists.    These sites should help with our case.  The board also said I would apply for a 504 plan when we called them this week. Thank you for your help.

I sympathize with you - I am facing the same problems with the schools here in Colorado for my 12 yr old daughter who also suffers from migraines. (since she was 8)

The schools refuse to give her a 504 or anything to help! I also have a 12yr old son with C.P. and the same school won't do what needs to be done on his IEP for him either. I am so disappointed in Colorado schools. I wish you the best! By any chance are you dealing with Jefferson County? they seem to be the worst!

Yes. I am in Jefferson county.  I actually succeeded in obtaining a 504 just last week.  The reasons I was able to get one were: I missed more that 50 percent of school in one week, when I get one I can not work, and they mess with my vision.  If your son or daughter have any of these and the school won't provided a 504 you can call the head of the department, I'll get the number from my mom, and explain your situation.  They will tell you if you qualify or not.  They told my mom to get the "No" in writing and if you don't agree then you can ask the board to review it.  I would try calling the head of the department first though.  We also got a note from my neuologist saying it was necessary or that they should consider it. Hope this helps. Smile
