Daily migraines and Fioreset medicine

By Chris Wednesday, January 21, 2009

My Fiance is waking up daily with a feeling of a burning sensation in one area on the left side of her head (above the ear and side). She takes Fioreset (spelling?) which stops the pain in 10-20 minutes. This is now happening on a daily basis and is depressing her. Are there any suggestions and should she be afraid of the medicine and it's toxic effects from using it daily.

Thanks!

Chris

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Yes,  Medication Overuse Headache (MOH) can occur if your fiance takes fioricet, or other prescriptions (even OTC medications can cause MOH) more than two to three days a week. She runs the risk of getting MOH and having head pain for a very long time -  as long as she continues to use this medication. This medication cannot be stopped cold turkey. She needs the help of a doctor to taper off the medication. We have information on this type of headache here:  Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires.

What did the doctor say? It may be time to see a Migraine specialist if she isn't getting anywhere with her doctor. A Migraine specialist is the expert, treating patients with Migraine disease and headache disorders only. Unlike a neurologist who treats so many different conditions like MS, stroke, and epilepsey, it is hard for them to be experts in any one area. We have a list of patient recommended specialists you can look at HERE

Hi Chris,

Your fiance's situation sounds alot like what I have been through for a year. I have burning on back left side of head and behind ear. My neurologist said it was occipital neuralgia and put me on Neurontin which is for nerve pain. I didn't find out until last month the cause of my pain was coming from arthritis in several of my neck joints closest to my skull. My pain specialist sent me for physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in my upper body and to help me get better posture ( which was causing the

nerve to get pinched). Hope you are able to get some answers.
