getting relief from nerve blocks AND accupuncture

By kdnewton Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Dear all in migraine community,

I have had chronic migraine since childhood, mostly cycle-related, but in the last few years they have gotten worse and more frequent due to many factors.  I recently took charge and went to see a specialist here in Austin, TX(there seems to be only one that I know of) who treats headache and migraine pain.  We started nerve block injections at the base of my neck, plus accupuncture therapy, plus continuing changes in my diet and lifestyle,  and I am having more headache-free days now than in the last few months!  It has definitely made a difference and I am telling everyone because I was borderline debilitated most of the time before this--unable to function because I was either having a migraine or recovering from one.  As all of us know, its very depressing and weakens us to the core!   Thanks to Teri's great book I did some more investigating to help myself manage better.  I had a bad experience with topamax(on it for 2 years w/ horrible side effects) and was taking the triptans way too often--almost half of the month, so here to tell you there is hope.  Keep asking questions and don't give up.  Managing better and looking forward to a better future in Austin, Tx

I'm so glad you found our site and Teri's book. Her book has given many people hope when they thought there wasn't any.

Here's to continued good luck in feeling better.

Dear Nancy,

As you already well know, just having others out there who are familiar with the isolation and pain we as migraineurs go through is a BIG SUPPORT.  It makes a huge difference in how I face each day now.  I know I am not alone, and this is my biggest strength facing the challenge of not only being a migraneur, but also the parent of one.  Its essential we all keep talking and sharing and learning, not just about migraine pain, but all the health issues related to chronic pain management and preventative therapies in general.  I sincerely hope our culture is moving forward in these areas.  We will all benefit greatly!!! Thanks again, I'm sure we will be keeping in touch, reagrds, Kdnewton, Austin, Tx

I would love to have the name of the doctor and accupuncturist you went to in Austin. I have been thinking that shots of Botox in the back of my neck would help prevent my migraines. I have been suffering from these for almost 30 years.

Dear Pam,

Are you here in Austin?  Hope you will look up this doctor's website online.  I am glad to give you his name--it is Dr. Rajat Gutpa.  His website gives you his background and education and what his clinic is all about, so read on.  Interestingly enough, I am also seeking accupuncture treatment for my daughter, who is too young for Dr. Gutpa's clinic, but I have found there are, no surprise, several places in Austin where they practice total body care/chronic pain, etc. thanks to the nationally recognized school for Oriental Medicine here.  Hope this helps you in your search!  There is hope, Kdnewton  P.S.  I am in the "30+ years club" too!! We have to hold strong.
