I went to the ER two days ago due to having excruciating migraine pain, nausea and vomiting. I was unable to take Relpax to abort the migraine as I was vomiting. I did use Imitrex (injected), but the pain continued to increase. When I arrived at the hospital I was seen fairly quickly. The doctor took a brief history and stated that the new protocaol for migraine treatment is to run IV fluids, followed by Benedryl and Thorazene. He stated that the IV would run for over an hour and then the meds would be given. (Keep in mind these meds do not stop the pain immediately). I tried to be cooperative and was able to wait about twenty minutes before I had to ask for something for pain. This pain med (Toradol) was effective in controlling the pain but I was still given the Benedryl and Thorazine, followed by a dose of Decadron. My feeling is that being given the pain med initially would have been enough. Not happy with this experience!!!Cry

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

I'm sorry you didn't have a good ER experience. They may have started IV fluids to rehydrate you before starting any pain medications. I know when I have an IV infusion in my doctors office to break a nasty Migraine cycle, the nurse will start off with fluids if I have been vomiting. Then they continue with their protocol.

We do have some forms you may want to take to your next doctors appointment and have him fill out to make your next ER visist a bit easier.  Emergency Migraine and Headache Care - Forms To Help.
