Help with Switching from Imitrex to another Migraine Medicine

By babs1 Tuesday, October 16, 2007

My insurance only allows 4 pills a month for Imitrex - has anyone used Imitrex and switched to another migraine medicine that worked for them? I use the 100 mg Imitrex. I can't take Topamax - unfortunately I had all the side effects and had to quit using it. I am desparate and always afraid that I will run out of medication. My doctor gives me extras imitrex occasionally but I need to be able to count on something when I need it? Any suggestions?

Thank you - I am getting desparate?

I had the same problems.  My insurance only allowed so much a month and I was using way more than that.  My doctor wrote a letter to the insurance co. telling them I needed more and they actually approved twice as much.  Maybe this is an option.  I know there were a couple times before we got everything situated where I ended up paying for it on my own because I was out and needed it....not cheap stuff!

 Good luck.

Sarah - thank you so much for your reply - it is certainly worth trying and I know my doctor would be more than happy to write a letter.Big Smile

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

I have some good news for you so try not to give up hope.  There are over 100 medications being used for Migraine prevention. With so many options topamax is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak Grin. Sometimes it is so hard to keep trying different medications when they never seem to work. With the right doctor, a Migraine specialist preferably, you will be able to find the right regime.

A word of caution on triptan, certain prescription and OTC medications. They can create another condition, Medication Overuse Headache. When someone is in a MOH cycle no Migraine preventive will work, period.

Hi - I get the 100 mg pills and am able to get rid of migraine with 25 mg usually, sometimes 50 mg.  I bought a pill cutter from Walgreen's and on good months can quadruple my supply.  Worth a try.

I so totally understand doing this. My insurance company limits how many tablets they pay for each month too. That said, tablets should NEVER be split without talking with your doctor in advance. The FDA approved prescribing information for Imitrex says NOT to split the tablets. So, please check with your doctor on this and please don't advise other people to do something that the prescribing info specifically says not to. We never really know why the prescribing information says this, and we need to always stay on the side of caution.
