Lamictal or Neurontin work for migraine prevention??

By CrowndVic Wednesday, April 25, 2012

I'm a 30 year old female suffering from chronic migraines (every other day for 2 months). Triptans and narcotics work to "abort" the migraine. All brain scans came back fine.

I started having migraines 8 years ago, for a period of 3 months. Then they mysteriously went away when I moved. (Stress?) After that my new neurologist diagnosed me as bipolar (a correct Dx) and I took Lamictal(Lamotrigine)for about 3 years to manage mood swings. I did not have a single migraine during this time. Now 2 years after stopping Lamictal for personal reasons, the migraines are back.

So what I'm wondering and hoping to find here on this forum, is - has anyone had success in preventing migraines with Lamictal?

My current Neuro says Lamictal won't work and tried me on Lyrica, which made me manic, and now Neurontin (Gabapentin). I've asked to try Topomax but because we *might* start a family soon, he doesn't want to go there because of the birth defect risks associated with Topomax.

So - Neruontin or Lamictal work for anyone out there?

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

Thank you for sharing your story with us. As much as we hate to disagree with doctors, Lamictal is used for Migraine prevention and many people have good luck with it. I'm wondering why he thinks it isn't a good option for you seeing as you had such good luck with it a few years ago.

Neurontin is also used for Migraine prevention and again, many people have good results with it. We just don't know who will benefit from these drugs as it differs from person to person. I took Zonegran for a while but it made me more depressed, while Teri Robert, Migraine Health Guide, takes it with pretty good results.

I have now used Lamotrigin for about one year, and haven't had a single fully developed migraine since. I had some minor aruas, but over all, I am very pleased with Lamotrigin. The side effect for me is that I get more tired, but so far it is worth it.

Before I started with Lamotrigin, I had fully developed migraines about every second month, and auras every week. I know that it isn't very often compared to many people, but I am still greatful that Lamotrigin is helping me.
