Today's rant against cigarette smoke

By AlliOOP Tuesday, January 19, 2010

While I can fully accept that I may not make many new friends with this sharepost, today I figured I'd use a sharepost to rant about smoking.  It burns my britches when people don't consider others in their need for a smoke

One of my triggers is smoke.  Cigarette smoke will trigger a migraine but cigar smoke is absolutely the worst.   My headache specialist calls it "odor induced migraine".   He also says it is tied to my other chemical sensitivities that are triggers - like perfumes, and strong chemical reactions.  Some of the triggers have to be ingested, but a small amount of smoke is guaranteed to cause a migraine with only one sniff.  While it is in my power to avoid many of the triggers, I haven't figured out how to avoid smoke without becoming a recluse.

Many smokers claim to have the right to smoke.  I do not disagree.  Just know that non-smokers usually desire breathing smoke free air.  They cannot control when the air is smoke free but you can.   If you are a smoker, please remember to have a little compassion.  Recently we were enjoying the view of animals in the water at a state park when I politely asked a very young smoker to put it out while standing beside me.  Instead, in an act of defiance, the person threw the still burning cigarette into the water with the animals.

So again I say, please have some compassion.  When the weather is nasty, move away from the entry doors at the store so that people don't have to walk thru your smoke.  Please refrain from standing next to the bathroom entrances when you are in a stadium or at a group gathering.  Don't light up in line/queue and try to hide it.  It can still be smelled from a distance.  Use designated smoking locations when they are provided.  Finally, don't be a rude, inconsiderate smoker.  Stop throwing lit items out your car windows, down in front of another person or throwing your butts on the ground  It really could be health and well being in jeopardy by your actions.

Midrin...well, not exactly

Good luck with that.

Smoke is a trigger for many people. It would be nice if more smokers were considerate, but the ones I know do a pretty good job of others needs.

I did like your post, however.

The few smokers I know try hard but that is because they know to be around me at all, they better not smoke near me or just before they see me.  The general public, not so much.

I completely agree. I have issues with migraines triggered by smoke too. I am super sensitive to fragrances as well. It's a terrible problem because most people do not seem to understand.

The truly don't understand.  Even some in the medical prefession (former smokers) explain that they didn't see how smoke or even perfume can be such a problem.  It just doesn't sink in (but the smell sure doesYell).  Sometimes I wish they had to walk in our shoes or at least have just one of our migranes.

Ugh! Since your post it seems smoke and smell are everywhere! Just today I was in a popular book store and a women had on sooooo much perfume I had to go to the other end of the store because she was going to trigger one for me...that rarely happens. But I am in a Migrainy/headachy cycle right now so it really doesn't take much.

Lay off the perfume and smoke in your own space. What about the smokers who wreck of smoke because they smoke at home - you walk past them and it is like you walked into a puff of smoke....ok I am done!
