Still no migraine...

By Winnie Sunday, October 07, 2007

Still no migraine since September 15 - almost a month. I have an appointment with my acupuncturist on Thursday, but he said to cancel if I do not get a migraine. I have participated in two races and did race committee for a race yesterday, all in the hot sun and physically challenging. Still, no migraine. Since I have been getting them at the rate of 4 - 5 a month for the last year or so, that is pretty freaking amazing. The real test will be this week: my period will start on Monday or Tuesday (I'm on the pill).

I'm still not ready to declare acupuncture the cause, though. I'll wait and see what happens over the next two or three months. If anyone is considering it, I don't think it could hurt, other than the treatment itself. My insurance does not cover it, but I have a Flexible Spending Account through my employer that reimburses the full expense - no questions asked.

Keep in mind that I am also getting intense massage therapy of the head and neck, and started Bikram's Yoga last Monday. All in an attempt to get things loosened up and aligned and healthy in case I do need to go on daily meds.

Hi Winnie!

Wow, I must say I am impressed with your story about the acupuncture, in conjunction with the other things you are doing, in an effort to be migraine free.  Congratulations!!  It is totally awesome!!  I hope it lasts for at least a year or more!!

Which prompts me to tell my tale regarding acupuncture.  Shortly after I gave birth to my son, a local doctor (who was certified to perform acunpuncture) suggested giving me acunpuncture for my migraines.  He saw how miserable I had been during my pregnancy with migraines, and he wanted to do what he could to help.

We had 4-5 sessions over a two-month time period and wah-lah.  I went for one, entire, freaking, long year without a migraine!!!!  No, not even a hint of a migraine!!  It was a miracle.  I almost forgot I had ever gotten the darn things at all.  That was one of the best years of my life, needless to say.  And yes, I absolutely credit it to the acupuncture.  There was nothing else in my life that I was doing differently, including diet and exercise.

So, for those of you who have not tried it, I highly recommend it.  And the procedure itself is really not that painful.  They stuck me with six tiny needles that were so small, I barely felt them.  You lie there for about 20-30 minutes in a darkened room, then the doc comes in and takes them out and you're done.  That was some of the best money I ever did spend!

Bravo to you, Winnie!  It is always so refreshing to hear that alternative therapies to medication are effective.  That way, if you are pregnant or allergic to meds, or can't take meds for some other reason, you have a back-up plan.

Cool beans, Winnie!  Keep it coming!  I know you are going to have fantastic success!

Warm thoughts and big hugs,

Kay

Kay,

How are you now?

Hey Win,

I am actually doing very well, these days, with the exception of a couple migraines over the past three weeks.  They were both caused by factors such as lack of sleep, constant exposure to fluorescent lighting, 12-hour days with no lunch break or scheduled breaks, having my hopes up for a promotion one day and then two days later, getting demoted in front of my peers, and a stiff, hearfelt crying jag.

Other than these two episodes, I have been pretty much migraine free for the past year and a half.  Every now and then I will get a mini migraine that is easily treated with a 100 mg tablet of Imitrex.  If my migraines come back in force, I will definitely go back to an acupuncturist.  I just haven't had the need to lately.

Currently, I take propranolol and Cymbalta as prophylactics (Cymbalta primarily for depression) and Imitrex 100 mg tablet for minor migraine pain and Imitrex injections for major migraine pain.  These work for me just about every time.

I sure hope you keep up your awesome track record with the acupuncture.  It is a real blessing if it works for you.

Take care,

Kay
