Hello all

By Tanya Tuesday, December 18, 2007

I am new to this forum and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Tatayana, friends call me Tanya. I have been living with migraines since I was 17 after a car accident. I just started taking Topamax 4 days ego, 25 to 50 mg before bed. I have been been doing a lot of reading on the drug and have some questions. It seems to have a lot of side effects, some good, some not so good :). So far I haven't experienced any side effects at all, maybe some loss of appetite, which is not a bad thing. Can someone tell me when the bad side effects show themselves...LOL. Like memory loss and being a little stupid..hahaha. I have read where they call the drug perfect super mpdel drug...makes you skinny and stupid, not funny, I know. Sorry. I am not a big girl, but could stand to lose a few pounds, but can't afford to lose any brain cells due to the nature of my work. Any advice and/or or help would be appriciated. Thanks and I am glad to have found this site. Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

An important word on side effects. They are potential, meaning the side effects listed may not happen to everyone. This is really important because we can get caught up in reading all the side effects and then waiting for them to happen. If all the potential side effects happened to everyone all the time, the FDA would never be able to approved new drugs.

Topamax works wonders for many people. For others it doesn't work out so well. It is a drug you hear a lot about because it is heavily advertised to patients and doctors. This doesn't mean it is the best choice for Migraine prevention, just one option. We have a lot of important information on Topamax you can see by clicking HERE.

Hi Tanya! I'm glad you found the site too. It is full of helpful info and it is a great place to vent where others actually understand and care.

I took topomax for a while. Unfortunately I never lost an ounce! (which I desperatly need to do) I did however have some changes in vision and thought processes. Of course I have problems with thought processes during a migraine attack.

I hope you get good results from the topomax.

Take care and let us know how it is working for you.

Good Morning Tanya,

I have been on Topamax for I guess about 9 months now.  I've been on 100 mgs for only about 3 months.  I call it my "blond drug".  I tolerate if well as long as I take it all at night.  I tried spliting the dose 50 night and morning and came to work much like a drunken sailor.  After speaking with a friend I knew was on the drug and found she was on all 200 mgs at night I spoke with my doctor and she ok'd it all at night.  I still have have focus problems.  But until I am completely off the antidepresent I was on, I don't know how much of that problem is from coming off of that vs the Topamax, though it does seem more pronounced since then.  My balance is a bit off.  I will not be skiing this year.  I have trouble finding some words.  When doing presentations or preparing for meetings I write more things out then I previously did to help compensate for that.

The balance and the word issue are clearly from the Topamax.  But when faced with the frequency of the migrianes I was having and the amount of medication I was having to take, I can deal with those problems.  Heck, my teenages always think I'm a bit off anyway!!!  I can now blame it on the medication.

Good luck Tanya,

Cindy
