Finally, a Dr that believes me!

By HeatHater72 Friday, August 15, 2008

I am 35 and have suffered migraines since I was a teenager, but since I started working 15 months ago I get them almost daily. I was finally sent to a migraine specialist.

He took his time talking to me and my mom. Then he examined me (typical neuro tests), and explained what he felt was going on. Other Drs had said I was already on everything they use as preventive (beta blocker, birth control, and Wellbutrin) even though that is not why I am on them, this Dr said that while that was partially true, there were some other choices and upgrades. He changed me to a different beta blocker (same family, just better for prevention) and added 400 mg Vitamin B2 daily.

He also went through each type of migraine I get and told me what to take for each type. That was a total relief because I always have to guess what will work. He added that taking 2 Naproxin with the Imitrex or Midrin might help.

I have Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome and getting through work is hard enough without dealing with exercise. He knew that before I even said anything and suggested I try just 5 or 10 mins a day of walking. (I'll try it as soon as the heat wave ends.Smile

The first day after starting the B2 I started getting a headache at work.  He had explained that the headache I get as a band around my forehead is a tension migraine, so I took the Midrin and Naproxin and it went away. It has been 3 full days since I started taking B2 and other than that one headache and some sinus pain I haven't had a headache, even though it has been in the high 90s-105 here. One of my triggers is heat. The Dr also sent me for an MRI and told me to keep a journal, check blood sugar (I'm Diabetic) and Blood Pressure (I have High BP), record activities, food, and describe headaches and their durations. This is so we can figure out my triggers and make sure I am on the correct dose of meds.

He also asked that if I get a headache other than a migraine to try nonmedicinal things to get through it so we can rule out the rebound headaches. I see him again in 6 weeks.

This is the first Neuro Dr that didn't treat me like it was all in my head (no pun intended). I don't know if I can name him here, but he is in NW Portland, Oregon.

A couple of suggestions that might be helpful.  If you are near an indoor mall, you might try walking there.  I also live in heat, Texas, and that's what I do if I don't want to be on a treadmill.  The only way I can get rid of a tension headache is with a massage to the neck and shoulders (other than drugs). When I used to live in St. Louis, they had massage therapists in a store (in a mall) that sold other help items for health.  I could walk in and get a chair massage - quick and no appt necessary.  If I did that a couple of times, I could get relief.  Many massage therapy locations also offer a chair massage, even though they prefer to do it on a table.  A couple of years ago, I committed to 2-3x per week appts, 30 min each time, for 3 months, to get my deeper neck/shoulder muscles more balanced, less tight.  After, I also did stretching excercises for the neck/shoulders and it's made a big difference for me.  Glad to hear that you found a doctor to help.

Thank you for your suggestions. I really wish I was near an indoor mall. The closest one is about 45 minutes away. Luckily my massage therapist is just down the road (less than a mile). I see her once a month, I wish I could afford twice a month. Without her I would not be able to work. I try to remember to stetch my neck during the day. The days I forget to stretch my headaches are worse. Before I can start walking though, I have to find different shoes. For some reason my feet have shrunk a size in the past year. Now my feet slide back and forth as I walk. I do think I will look into the quick neck/shoulder massage since my neck has been getting worse.

On another note. I stated my age incorrectly. I'm actually 36 not 35. Laughing

I saw my Doctor again and he upped my bp meds. My headaches were getting better, but now I've had 2 really bad ones since my visit a week ago. I think today's was triggered by not eating regularly and the weather. It took a midrine, 2 naproxin, and Imitrex nose spray to get rid of it. I did wait between the midrine/naproxin combo and the Imitrex. I hope my ENT doctor has something for me besides Nasonex for my sinuses. I get my new C-Pap machine next Thursday. Who knows if that will help or not. I'm really depressed now. I thought I had finally stopped having the really bad ones. I take my B-2 and other daily meds, everyday. I keep my area cool and still I have these headaches. Here it is my day off and I have to spend it in bed. Sorry, I'm just having a pity party and wanted some company.
