Educating a Doctor

By Mr Wonderfuls wife Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I have finally been released from all but 1 of my DRs. I guess I'll always have my migraine specialist. Anyway, while I was at my orthopedic dr last week we were discussing my migraines and he said "my father suffers from true migraines" as if mine were not "TRUE" migraines. Needless to say this ruffled my feathers a little. So, I took this rare moment to briefly educate him in migraines a neurological disease. I also provided him with this website address and invited him to join us in the forum. I did not do this in a condescending way. I told him that I understood that this was not his area of expertise and that in medical school "headaches" are only breifly touched on. I also explained that it might help him with his dad. I hope he looks in on it.

While I was being nice I was thinking to myself "you stupid jerk"! I know if he does visit this web site he'll see this but it is ok. I'm only human! I have a right to feel and think what I wish.

Anyway, like I said I was released from his care but with permanate restrictions. I can only drive for 30 min at a time with 1 hour of rest then another 30 min for a total of no more than 4 hrs per day. Also no overhead reaching, no repeated lifting and no working with arms extended in front of me. I thought to myself...is there anything I can do?

I also saw my headache dr last week. He gav eme a back up med for when the Imetrex doesn't work because the pain has been worse for a couple of weeks. Dilaudid makes me loopy and quite sleepy but what else can you do when a migraine sets in? As long as it lessens the pain.

Hope everyone has a great day!

'Til next time,

Anita

oh happy days!

Hi Anita!

I was thinking as I read your post...Do you think your Orthopedic doctor meant "classic" migraines?  I've heard one other person (not a doctor) mix up these names.  If I remember correctly, "classic migraine" is the old term for migraine with aura...Regardless, your doctor certainly would learn something if he came here to visit us!!Wink

I know rescue meds really don't make you feel good.  But you should be using them very infrequently.  And only if the migraine is really severe.  As my HA specialist said, if the migraine is bad enough to need your rescue med then you DEFINITELY should be in bed trying to sleep!!

Hope you're having a good day today!!

Hey Jenny!

How have you been?

I thought about that too but it wasn't so much what he said but how he said it. "TRUE" was very emphasised. It really was as if he was trying to get a point across. I could be wrong (please don't tell my hubby that...lol) but I don't think so.

As for my migraines if I don't take my Imetrex when the auras and such hit then they do no good. I give them a couple of hours to work along with ice packs and lying down. If that doesn't help I go to the Dalaudid. I know I can only take the imetrex 2-3 days per week and the dalaudid 1-2 days per week ( and I also lean towards the lower side of the doses). I've had rebound headaches before.  Those are no fun either. But what can you do during those times when migraines hit everyday? I've had to rely on the ice, a quiet dark room and pray for sleep.

Hope you have a great day!

Anita
