long term use of Amerge

By readerwoman Saturday, November 17, 2007

I have lived with miraines for the last 36 years, since I was 18. Afer having three children over 13 years, my headache pattern changed. I started to get them about 2 days before my period, and they would last about 10- 12 days. I teach young children, and I have missed litle work due to my headaches, largely because I take Amerge 2x/day for the duration or as needed. Sometimes I need one on my "off-pattern" days. I also take Neurontin as a "preventative". I wonder if it is really working, but I am hesitant to go off of it to find out.

Question:  Has anyone experienced a similar need for long-term(1012 days) use of a triptan for your migraine? Any discussion / concern from your doctor about overuse?

I've not used Amerge or any other triptan in this fashion because my Migraines were never affected by my cycle.

Both Amerge and Frova have been studied for use like this, but only for 5 - 7 days. They were both found effective for preventing menstrually associated Migraine, but those were short trials. I don't know of any clinical data about the long-term effects of such usage.

Hopefully, others who use Amerge similarly to the way you use it will come along to offer you their experiences.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

I have menstrual Migraine too and used Amerge that way some time ago. It worked for a while then we changed the plan. My memory is not the greatest so the details are a bit off.  The problem may become Medication Overuse Headache, but if your Migraine cycle stops at the end of 10 days  that may not be the issue. It may be time to rethink your preventive plan with your doctor.
