You can have my Maxalt when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. The same is true for my Topamax and my Midrin. I am a firm believer in “better living through chemistry.”
I know I’m not alone in this. Those of us that are chemically dependent on being as pain-free as possible talk amongst ourselves. However, I also know that there are migraineurs out there that avoid the chemicals completely. They’ve chosen a different path.
There are some therapies that I’m totally “down with.” They make sense to me. Things like CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea. The idea that lack of oxygen while you’re sleeping might be the root cause of your migraines makes sense.
There are a couple of migraineurs that I know that have been treating their migraines with a more physical therapy. One is using a combination of massage and physical therapy, while another is using chiropractic treatment. Both have had good results from that approach.
Another alternative therapy is herbal medicine. The one that I’ve heard mentioned for migraine relief is feverfew, and it is now available over the counter in a few different nutritional supplements. I’ve never tried it, but I’ve heard a lot of positive chatter about it online.
The one that still gets my pants in a bunch, though, is homeopathic “medicine.” Before you spend money on a homeopathic cure, I encourage you to spend some time researching the history of homeopathy. It’s not very long, only about 200 years, and it reads like something out of a Mary Shelly novel.
