Help!  I have been taking narcotics for 6 years for my migraines (fentanyl patches, oral morphine daily; morphine supp for breakthrough; demeral inj 3x month).  I had Kaiser Permanent ins. and this was not a problem.  We lost this ins. and now have BC/BS.  In the real world NO ONE will help me.  I want to gradually stop taking the meds, but no dr. will even prescribe for me.  The reg drs send me to pain mgmt, pain mgmt won't touch head pain send to neuro; neuro won't give narcotics.  I have found a chiropractor who is doing cranial work and in 72 hours I am 85% better but I CANNOT JUST STOP TAKING MY MEDS!  I have been to the er 3x in 2 weeks with no luck.  I tried one time last year to just stop taking my meds and ended up calling 911, got yelled at by paramedics for being so stupid, and the hosptial put me right back on the meds.  I had a 10 day stay for 24 hours of withdrawl. I CAN'T DO THIS AGAIN.  I live in Denver, CO.  ANY SUGGESTIONS???

you are suffering so. But we are unable to give out medical advice because we are not medical professionals.

Making it clear to your doctor that you want to taper off your medication should be enough to help you taper of the narcotics. I don't understand why a doctor wouldn't want to help a patient taper off narcotics.

I've tapered off narcotic medication for chronic head pain and it was not a pleasant experience. Slow is better with your doctors help, and you will still experience withdrawal symptoms, that's a fact. Maybe speaking with your pharmacist will help.

Good luck.

I read your story and I saw my life flash right by me in the past. What has helped me is Topomax, and if I feel a headach coming on I will take a lorazapam and if it gets real bad  I will take a Phenegran, but that is rare now. Hope this helps !

Dear Jan~

I suffered horribly for a few years until I was able to figure out the "triggers".  I can't do anything about the monthly cycle, but the stress, certain foods and sleep issues can be dealt with.  There are daily meds to help prevent migraines, talk to your doctor about these options.  Also, I have heard of a few "natural" aids.  No matter what you do, you will go through withdrawls, that is a fact.  But if you could find something that would end the migrians, this would end your need for the drugs.  One remedy I have heard of is the plant/flower FEVERFEW.  The leaves must be preserved in alcohol to make the tincture.  (I once met a lady who grew her own and canned it in Vodka)  I was looking into this when my headaches tapered off.  It might be worth trying.  Good Luck to you!  ~ Statia
