After 17 years, finnally something is working

By davidselby02 Thursday, February 21, 2013

Starting sometime in high school I began to have headaches on a weekly basis. After Marine Corps boot camp they began to occur twice a week with an average intensity of 3-5. I sought help while in the Marine Corps but would not allow a diagnosis of Migraine as I felt (and still feel) there has to be a real cause. The headaches continued at a 3-5 day a week pace until I deployed with the reserves to Iraq. There they were a daily occurrence. I took to chewing 3 Excedrin twice a day. I did end up with rebound headaches and the oral steroids were prescribed later to help stop them. Still, after returning from Iraq my headaches persisted with about 2 days a week without one. When I did have them they ranged in intensity from 7-9. I tried beta blockers, anti-seizure meds, and anti-depressants as a preventative option. Maxault works sometimes and over the counter (Naproxen or Excedrin) combined with prescription Reglan helped some when they did come on.

Every gain I achieve seems to last only a little while and I always felt dazed, unable to concentrate like I used to and lethargic. About 3 weeks ago I had a craving for Grape Nuts cereal (its weird but I did). The next day I had the best day I had had in 5 years. At the time I could not figure out what made the difference. Three days later while suffering a migraine I thought about everything I did the day I didn't have a headache. I thought back to the night before and those Grape Nuts. I looked at the box and noticed they were abnormally high in iron. A couple of days later I went to the store and bought vitamin D and iron. I am here to tell you that that combination is all I have done differently and I have not felt this good in 15 years. I don't wake up with a headache. I can't feel the onset coming and except for some very localized pain on a few occasions I have not had a migraine. I have tried everything, CT scans, blood pressure checks, diets, you name it. I have never had a low iron count during a blood test and cant explain it. I have to believe the iron or vitamin D is doing something. Try it. It will only cost a few bucks. I know how horrible migraines are, what they do to your family, work and your own personal motivation. Lets hope this continues working for me and that someone else can get it to work for them. Everyone is a little different but if even one person could feel as good as I do then all this typing is for the best.

By the way I did discover a research paper linking migraines and iron deficiency.

David,

Congratulations on finding something that has helped you and thanks for sharing your suggestion. Sure can't hurt to give it a try, can it? My mom used to eat Grape Nuts every day. I didn't realize they were still around.

Good luck to you. I hope you remain head pain free!

Yep, they are still around. I hope things stay as good as they have been and I pray others can bennifit from a suggestion. Everyone has a different experience but I would bet there is at least one person out there with similar problems.

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

First I'd like to thank you for your service to our country. Without brave men and women like youself, we wouldn't be the great country we are today. Again, heartfelt thanks.

I so happy to hear you've seen a reduction in your Migraine frequency. Some times any little upset in our overly sensitive systems, can trigger a Migraine attack. Thanks for sharing your story with us and I wish you continued good luck.

Migraine is a genetic neurolgoical disease thought to be caused by overactive neurons in our brains and genetics. When our brains are exposed to to certain stimuli (Migraine triggers) these excitable neurons respond in some cases by starting a Migraine attack. Migraine triggers include certain foods, smells, lights, skipping meals, changes in barometric pressure, dehydration and more. We have information on Migraine triggers you can read about in our Migraine Trigger Page.
