No more urgent care!

By califmom2 Monday, August 09, 2010

Had a major thumper migraine for 16 hours.  Had taken 2 Relpax--my limit--and called my neuro when it continued.  Finally got thru to him and he said to come in for an injection.  Stupidly, I took that to mean go to the urgent care in the same clinic. I waited for 2 hours in terrible pain, with all the noise and light, until I got my shot of Demerol and Vistaril.

I went in for an appt. with him 10 days later and asked if there were some protocol I should have for such pain.  I have been on a low dose of Topamax, which he doubled, but he is not a fan of rescue meds. He said if it happens again, I am to come directly to his office, not the urgent care, for an injection. Yay! He was very sympathetic and even said, "why didn't you come into my office?" I told him I guess I wasn't listening very well then.  He sort of clucked and said he understood. He also said that if the Topamax wasn't doing the trick, we'd try something else. Looks like I got a good one.

Not exactly...been on Topa for a year at 25 mg.  I am one of those people for whom small doses of meds have big effects.  Anyway, my neuro increased  it to 50 mg and said we'll leave it at that for awhile or if I need to we'll go higher or change meds if the side effects bother me.  I told him weight gain as a side effect (from some of the other preventatives) was a deal breaker and he said that was ok with him, we'd see what we saw.

At least Urgent Care treated you!  Health Central Urgent Care refused to treat me and then charged me $100.  I never even got to see a doctor and they refused to waive the bill!

How can they refuse to treat you?  I don't understand.  What did you tell them?

They said that because my migraine was different (ie worse than usual, not responding to my usual meds, hence the need for urgent care) they didn't feel that they could treat me and my best course of action was to go to the emergency room.  I wouldn't have minded if they didn't bill me for this.  It sounds like the original poster got a shot and some treatment, which is what I was looking for.

I did have that situation, e.g., not responding to the usual meds.  But my urgent care is in my med. clinic where my neuro is located, so they could have called him if necessary.  I have gone to the ER in the past (middle of the night) when my meds did not work and have had a surprisingly positive experience--after I tell them what I have taken, who my neuro is, they take my vitals and shoot me up.

If you don't have a written emergency treatment form from your doc, get one.  There's one listed somewhere here on this site--sorry, don't know where it is.  The other thing to think about it is if it's "the worst pain you've ever had," they are going to admit you for big-time tests for an aneurism or something, so consider their POV. Remember, they have to cover their medical butts so they are reluctant to treat.
