Does anyone have any experience dealing with either a magnesium deficiency or b12 deficiency as a cause of their migraines?   I was recently diagnosed as iron deficient (anemic for more than a year) .... I am taking iron supplements daily, and I discovered some interesting information about th...

I have been seeing a naturopath recommended by my migraine specialist.  He has diagnosed a b12 deficiency with me.  I have struggled with migraines my entire life.  I was born with this disease.  I am now 52 years young. I struggle with daily migraines. The B12 difieciency is a new diagnosis.  I haven't been given any treatment as of yet.  I am extremely sensitive to minerals and vitamins.  they seem to trigger a sever migraine attack.  I would like more information about what to do.  I will post when I get more details.

    Hi there,

Magnesium is often used as a preventive for Migraines. Certainly, any time our body is under stress, either physical or emotional, we are more susceptible to our triggers. So, let's say having problems with magnesium/B12 may put your body under physical stress. Then you get dehyrated, eat too much chocolate and the barometric pressure changes - you may get a Migraine attack. Does that make sense?

Let me know if I can help further, ok?

    Nancy

Thank you for your info nancy!  It makes sense!! and guess what, I had a #10 HA on july 4,5, and went to the er on the 6th and that is when they treated me with magneisum sulfate on top of my other meds. I truly believe the magnesium made the difference--I was headache/vomiting/nausea free within 2 hours and they sent me home. Now, it is August 5th today and  NO HEADACHES SINCE THE ER VISIT!!! A WHOLE MONTH!!!! I see my general doctor tomorrow to discuss a supplement, my neuro is on vacation till the end of august, but this has been a huge, HUGE improvement, so Im antsy to see if the supplement is a good idea.....

thanks again for the info!!! I hope things are going well with you. How have you been?

Before I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency I used to get migraines. Now that I get B12 injections they are a lot less frequent and not as severe.

A little while after being diagnosed with B12 deficiency, I was diagnosed with CFS/ME (which migraines are a common symptom of for many people). Magnesium is a factor in this, so I started taking it recently.

The link between them that I can see, is energy metabolism: B12 and Magnesium both play a crucial role in the generation of ATP(The universal energy molecule). Studies have shown that migraines as well as CFS/ME are linked to abnormal metabolism involving ATP.

Another thing of interest, about the whole energy relationship, is the ratio of women to men that get migraines. It's about the same as that for CFS/ME: approximately 3:1.

Long term B12 and Magnesium supplementation may help alleviate symptoms.

Now, here's a question I'm confused about -- how exactly does b12/magnesium defiency get diagnosed? I was recently informed I was iron-deficient (anemia, that has went for far too long) and put on an iron supplement..... I truly believe the magesium sulfate they used in conjuction with my other meds on July 6th (ER trip) made the TREMENDOUS difference in my migraines. TODAY IS AUGUST 5TH, AND I HAVEN'T HAD A HEADACHE SINCE THE ER TRIP!!!!! Tongue out

I made an appt with my general Dr for tomorrow to discuss this recent idea/development/improvement (my neuro is on vacation till end of august).....thanks for the info :) i hope things are well with you

I think you can have a blood test to determine both b12 and magnesium deficiency; although I'm not sure how accurate this is for magnesium. Other diagnostic tests might be of more use.

It's been over a month since I had a migraine also. They usually only happen when I over exert myself.

    Take care.

I dont know if I have any magnesium and or B12 deficiency.  ...however I've been getting migraine since I was a teenager.  My mom gets it, aunt, sisters.. and myself.

A headache specialist told me to go on high dosage of (B12 & magnesium) when I started getting migraines very frequently.  I took it every day for at least 2 years..and afterwards, whenever I get a migraine..the pain is so much less than before.  On a pain scale of 1 to 10(most painful)..if it was an 8 on regular basis,..now it's a 2!

Funny thing is that.. I've stopped taken it..(I should not)..but u know.. sometimes when the pain goes away so does the meds.. and whenever I get a migraine..as soon as it starts I take tylenol & magnesium..and it fades away.
